Are in NPC mode some aditional weapons my companions can use?

I'm asking because a weird thing happened during my gameplay yesterday. I was returning from The Glow with all the loot I could get there, back to the Brotherhood of Steel. En route we had a random encounter with bunch of radscorpions. We started to fight them and when Ian was on the move, he suddendly switched his .223 pistol for minigun and he started firing from it!

I have played unmodded Fallout 1 very long time ago and I don't remember anything like that happened to me. I always thought that Ian is capable of using only knives, pistols and SMG! Is this some additional feature of NPC mod I didn't know about?

In Fallout (unmodded) the followers always have the same appearance, even if you give them different armor. Creating a new character is very time consuming, that's (probably) why the only character with all animations is the vault-dweller (he/she can use rifles, spears, sledgehammers, etc). The reason why Ian can't use a flamethrower, isn't because he's bad at big guns skill, it's because he is missing the animations.

With NPC mod, the followers use the same animations of the vault-dweller, that's why they can use more weapons.
Well, I figured out that this issue was fixed in version 3.5. I've had an access to older version of this mod and that's why I'm "suffering" in the game :). Tbh, Ian with minigun is very interesting idea, although he has zero Big guns skill.
