I just bought Fallout 1 today: download was fine, passed the integrity check, launches up fine now (I did have the "error: cannot initialize video mode" but fixed it by rennaming ddraw.dll), but now if I try to skip the game intro (the one beginning with "Brian Fargo") the background turns green and locks up. Even if I don't try to skip the intro and let it run, as soon as it's over the game freezes and shows a hippy-rainbow-coloured, pixelated vault door screen - I don't even get to the main menu.

Win XP SP2 (virtual machine run via Parallels Desktop; host is Mac OS X 10.4.11). ATI Radeon x1600 GC in host OS.

I have tried to re-download from GOG already. Nothing else is running.

You could try the patched outlined in the 2nd post in this thread: http://www.gog.com/en/forum/fallout_series/fallout_series_sticky_renovation

Not guaranteeing it'll fix anything, but installing those patches eliminated all technical issues I had with the game.

Thanks for the try, but I've tried those patches - no change. :(

In your "f1_res.ini" file, make COLOUR_BITS = 16

In your "ddraw.ini" file, make Mode=0

I have tried changing it to 16 with no result.

As for Mode=0, I will try that as soon as I reinstall (my VM went really weird and I had to delete it and now must reinstall the games and programs I had on it). I will write again once I have tried it. Thanks for the suggestion.

I think this link should help you with your display problems, and I think it may help you with the game not starting up properly too. There are several different methods that seem to work.

Has anyone who had these problems been able to fix it?

Running X51, Windows 7, tried installing Pallettestealer, latest patch, and the red grass program, and I am still having the green-background hippy-vault-door problem.
