So, I'm searching Vault 15 and I go into a room and Ian (who I picked up in Shady Sands) has blocked the way out and won't move. What do I do? I tried telling him to change his formation and even to leave, but he just stands there. I take it this is a common problem... Is there a way to get your 'guys' to move out of the way when you want them to? The game is fully patched and moded with the most important ones... Thanks.

You are going to have to try waiting him out and hoping he moves or load from a earlier save. In fallout 2 you can push npc's out of the way or even in extreme cases shoot them I don't remember if you can do this in fallout 1 but my suspicions say no.
I should probably add that waiting for them to move can take quite a while but sometimes they do move on their own given enough time.

have you tried resting or waiting a few hours or days? I find that usually helps.

Thanks to you both for the suggestions and I will try them *next* time. What I did finally was just re-load from a previous save. I've been saving *often*. :)
Thanks again!
Loving this game so far... I missed it first time around ~ 12 years ago. Don't know why I didn't really like it then, but I'm really enjoying it now.

I missed it the first time around as well, but picked it up in the whitebox deal a few years back. Be sure to play fallout 2 after you complete 1 its just as good.

OK, will do... I heard (back then - a *long* time ago) that F2 had a lot of bugs. Does this release here fix them all? And is there a res patch for F2 also? Thanks much.
Fallout 2 fully patched gets rid of all the major bugs I believe. I didn't run into anything that ruined my day when I played it last.
As for High resolution patches this

is probably one of the better ones out there if all you want to do is change the game to run at higher resolution and not change how the game plays.

You're going to LOVE fallout 2, it's got a "Get the hell out of my WAY!!!" button where you can just push people out of the square they're in. As someone who's been in your situation several times, I think it was my favourite feature of F2
I got into situations before where I had to actually *KILL* my buddy because he was blocking my way, and I had no 20-mins-prior quicksave before that. Ugh. The "get lost!" feature was the best improvement to F2's interface lol

Well, seeing that I just got started on F1 - it'll be awhile, but yes, I'm glad to hear about that feature in F2... Looking forward to it down the road. Thanks.
Heh.
I had more of a problem with Ian's combat AI. Killing the Super Mutants guarding the Necropolis, and sending most of the weaker ones running away in a panic. The fight was already over when Ian ran out of bullets, whipped out his knife and chased down the runners.
Actually killed both of them, but got brave and attacked the healthy one who had nothing to do with us. KA-POW!
Didn't bother reloading a save, he had it coming :)

Yeah I had something similar with him in the super mutant base with all the forcefields, they were too dumb to not walk through them so I just left their ashes where they fell and went on alone
I don't think I ever used companions in Fallout 1, except the dog. I just assume that like in real life companions simply get in the way.

Both playthoughs of Fallout 1 I lost dogmeat here. Supposedly you can lock him up in that room in the middle left.

I always did everything I could (often reloads) to save the dogmeat.. I loved having him there!
