I just bought Fallout 1 in its original disc form. I installed it with the 1.2 and 1.3.5 unofficial patches and the hi res textures patch. The game runs pretty smoothly with no graphical glitches. I chose one of the stock characters just to see if the game would run properly before getting into it. I got to shady sands and then decided everything was fine, so I went back and made a custom character. This time every time a rat would hit me in the starting cave the game would crash with an error message popping up. The same thing happens whenever a radscorpion hits me as well. The problem is that the screen blacks out before the desktop comes back up and I can't see the error message to see what's wrong. I'm running windows 7 64 bit with an intel i3 processor. Does anyone know what might be the problem?

Reinstall and play without the hi-res modification for a while and see if you have better luck.

I reinstalled once and it didn't change anything. Without the hi res patch everything is in warped rainbow colors.
I had the same rainbow effect with Santarium and Starcraft on Windows 7. For Starcraft all I had to do was load the game, alt+tab out, then alt+tab back, and it was fine.

For Sanatarium, this didn't work. The fix I found was weird, but effective. Before opening the game, I'd right click on the desktop, go to Properties, click the Settings tab, click the Advanced button, select the Monitor tab, and leave it there. Load the game, and it was perfect, no rainbow effect.

I'd try both of these. One might work.
