Save early, save often. Keep multiple saves. :)
Sorry, no real help to offer. Crashed now and then for me too, not to the same error though.

Make sure you're running the game as administrator. You could also consider installing to a locaiton other than Program Files as that folder has extra protections in Windows 7 and this can cause problems with older games. Theoretically running as administrator will bypass all that though.

i have crash issues to but mine is installed from the cd version of fallout i think it is a glitch in the core of the code that didnt show up in testing
