Hello Community !,

I know that GOG had an event on last december (2013) where you could get fallout 1, 2 and tactics for free. Unfortunately I was not a member of GOG (or even aware of the sale) at the time. Does anyone how I can get fallout 1, 2 or Tactics for mac ?

Thanks :-)
Unfortunately, if you didn't get the Fallout "trilogy" for free last year, there's no way as of now to get the three classic games here on GOG, since they had a deal with Interplay and Interplay lost the selling rights to their Fallout games to Zenimax/Bethesda.

So, right now, your best bet to get the games legally would be to purchase them on Steam or get a hold of some Mac disc copies from some online store (though I highly doubt they would even run on any modern Mac OS).

NB: I'm not sure whether the Steam version of the games are MacOS compatible. All I could see on the Fallout (1) game page was Windows as a compatible OS.

Your best bet is to buy a PC disc version (Fallout trilogy box is still available here and there for under $15).

And then learn how to run stuff in wine. AFAIK, all three have ready to download wineskins and should work fine.
A bit of a hassle (something I haven't bothered with, having a gaming PC).

Other than that, you'd need an emulator or run windows in bootcamp.

The original mac versions are no go. I'm not even sure if they can run in OSX, definitely not in intel macs.
That is, unless you happen to have a 10 yr old mac on your hands.
I'm not sure if the gift keys for Fallout games are still valid (those which were actually bought, not acquired for free) but if they are, you could pop over to GOG trading thread and see if someone has extras lying around. Small chance, but worth a shot.

I've just checked my Fallout trilogy case, and there is no mention of Mac under OS heading. By the looks of things, Bethesda didn't in any way try to make Fallout Mac compatible on Steam either. There is a sale on Green Man Gaming right now. Three classic Fallout titles for $12

Of course, there is also that way to get yourself GOG versions of Fallout games...

Actually there are updated versions that were released by Macplay for OSX. I've still got them installed on my MacPro, as a matter of fact. On the other hand, I haven't actually tried to use them in a long, long time, and I have no idea what problems one might encounter trying to use them with the latest versions of OSX.

Even for a mac user, the windows version is the best bet, since most of the famous mods will only work on that version. Bootcamp works like a charm, of course, and I'm sure wine versions work too if you're willing to tinker a bit to get them running.

I've got the trilogy box myself, as well as the no-longer-available GOG.com versions.

Do try actually, I'd be interested.
To my knowledge, PowerPC code shouldn't run in 10.6. or later.

Well, to be fair, PPC code can be used in 10.6 as Rosetta is an optional download for 10.6 users. It was not installed by default, but available. From 10.7 and onwards, there is no practical way to run PPC Macintosh apps. They're just trash to Apple.

Thank you Apple. Thanks a bunch.

I'll try, but I'm still using Snow Leopard (10.6.8), so that won't help with the more recent versions of OSX.

The updated MacPlay versions of Fallout and Fallout 2 are not PPC apps, though. They are - or were - made to run on OSX. Early OSX, at least.

UPDATE: So I tried my old OSX Fallout 2, and it was basically the way I remember it. Everything seems to work, but the graphics are all screwed up. The scaling is broken in some way, but more importantly the color palettes are SNAFU. Everything looks psychedelic! I seem to remember there was a significant change made in one of the early Snow Leopard updates that messed up old 256 color graphics, including the Fallouts. No idea whether there's a patch or a fix out there to be found.

I wish I could be more specific but there is a fix for them. I had to do it for my Steam versions a few years ago.

Oh, it wouldn't surprise me. This problem has been around for several years now, so I'm confident there is a solution by now. I don't have the inclination to spend the time to look in to it at the moment, but I encourage anyone who wants to do the legwork to go ahead. Hopefully the results will be shared here.

Oh, didn't notice the update before today.
Surprised I am, I was sure it wouldn't even start on intel macs.

And yeah, can't remember if 256 colors and 16 bit color settings were removed on one go,
but both are gone now anyway.

Caused similar problems years earlier when b&w and 16-colors support was removed.
I had graphics/colour issues recently as well with this and Diablo 2. The workaround was a little strange but solved the issue for me. It's described here:
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/archive/index.php/t-943994.html

Steps:
1. Right-click on your desktop and select "Personalize"
2. Change the Desktop Backround to "Solid Color"
3. Save those settings and close the window
4. Re-open that window by right-clicking on your desktop and selecting "Personalize" again
5. Leave that window open while you run the game
