Just came from steam, was excited to start all over again (only ever played fallout on console) I've spent a few hours in the wasteland already having to cope with several crashes but i did make progress, so now I've bought the Gog version, is it as simple as copy paste into a gog fallout 3 save folder? Or do I have to start over again?

Just copy paste.
Curiously I decided to start the gog fallout 3 GOTY version and the game automatically detected the save file and the settings from steam GOTY version, I loaded it up and it crashed in the exact same spot in the super duper mart as the steam version. But I'll try copy and pasting the save file over now
Do copy paste the fallout 3 goty save from steam to gog work?

Are you using any mods? If you use any interior mod, try to disable it and then try to go to the Super Duper Mart.

If you are not using mods, consider using mods.

Updated Unofficial Fallout 3 Patch fixes many issues. There's also an issue that Broken Steel DLC makes Super Duper Mart crash, so if the Unnofficial Patch does not fix the crashing, consider installing also the Unofficial Fallout 3 Patch Broken Steel esp.

If it still crashes, try to start a new game and beeline to Super Duper Mart to see if it's your save game.

Save files in general are handled by the game, not the platform. In most cases if you switch platforms, the save file location remains the same and the new install should find the save games automatically. There is no need for the game to read or write different save game information if the platform changes so they should be compatible, regardless of the game.

(As in, as long as the platforms are both PC. I don't think you could use Playstation save files on a PC and vice versa.)

I have not tried Fallout 3 this way so I am not 100% sure, but as Spock666 mentioned the game found the save files automatically. So I would say yes, they should work. And you don't need to copy and paste them anywhere. The save game location will be the same so they are already in the correct place.

My recent platform change was with Dragon Age Origins where I switched from EA Play to Steam and since the save game location was the same, Steam version found the saves automatically and I could load the save I was playing and continue from there.

With the GOG version the game still freezes
Maybe the issue got saved with the file?

No idea, just thought I'd throw it out there since I know if my Dragon's Dogma save file fails to load properly, the game will sometimes always crash for that particular save file afterwards and never recover. (game only use one save file unfortunately)

Thank goodness for the dinput8 dll hooks files from a Nexus Mods modder allows for backup save files. DDDA game is a bit more hardcore in their insanity checks according to some of the modders.

Maybe FO3 has a few checks in place and the save file maybe failed one of those checks for the GOG install vs the Steam install? Kinda like a corrupt save will always be a corrupt save thing. Try maybe transfering an earlier save or even a bit further back just to see?

Have you tried any of the following:

- Disable mods (especially interior mods) if you use any
- Install the Unofficial Patch mod
- Started a new game and tried to go to Super Duper Market then

Sometimes if there is a glitch and you then save a game, the glitch gets saved to the save file. Even if the game is then patched, this save game file may still show the issue. You can find this out by starting a new game and going to the Super Duper Market as soon as possible.

Since you're only testing if it crashes with a new game, you don't need to worry about your SPECIAL or anything else. Just beeline there as soon as you can. Use a speedrun guide if you like: https://www.speedrun.com/fallout_3/guide/y6bhe
