Hello,

So I just Fallout 1 on gog. Getting back into games, and figure I try and play some older classics that I never played before. Was wondering if there's anything else I should get or know? Are there any mods you recommend or something of the sort?
No need for any mods, the original game works fine.

If you are looking to see what's available check out this thread - http://www.gog.com/forum/fallout_series/fallout_mods/page1 - it even gives details of what the different mods do.

I respectfully disagree. I would recommend at least installing Sduibek's Fallout FIXT patch since it fixes a lot of issues with the vanilla release. If you want the "purist" experience that only fixes bugs and does not change the gameplay (mostly), download the FIXES ONLY version here: http://www.nma-fallout.com/threads/fallout-fixt-0-81alpha-july-5th-2015.194562/

Also:
-Save often and save in different slots.
-If you find any RadX or Rad-Away items, hang on to them. You will know when to use them.
-The game's main quests are on a time limit, but they are not too restrictive. You can still do all sidequests in time.
-Try not to look up guides and walkthroughs as much as possible. Fallout is very story driven and you will enjoy the game more when you figure out one of the many ways to complete a quest. =)
-And check out this page: http://beforeiplay.com/index.php?title=Fallout_1

Enjoy!
I played version 1.0 and even this worked well enough. The version here should even be better patched. My opinion is: If it's not broken, don't fix it (unless it's the censored version and you want more blood).

Just keep in mind, op, that it's only safe to play vanilla v1.0 in the first Fallout, not in the second. Well, not 100% safe, but you should not have many problems.

Which you'll have in the second game.

I remember saves getting corrupted, many CTDs, and serious bugs in unpatched Fallout 2, like the car truck disappearing with all the items you had stored in it.
Getting attacked for no reason, too, ruining any quests you could do in the location.
And if you want to be a boxer, prepare to fight against bugs, not only against human opponents.
I also remember getting stuck for months, trying to find Vault 13, which is a location of critical importance. IIRC, there was a bug in the place where you get the location of said vault, so it was impossible to get this info, without using a save editor and changing the value of a variable.
This was many years back, internet wasn't that popular or widely available like it is nowadays, so downloading official patch was not an option.

I agree.

I played both FO1 and FO2 GoG versions to the end, with no additional community "fixes".

They are both fine as is.

Also if you do have an issue, you don't have to wonder if it was caused by whatever "fixes" you used, and also if you are looking for quest advice, you can use standard walthroughs from the internet, none of which use community "fixes".

IMO at least for the first play, people should just stick to the original game.

After you played once, then you can think about experimenting.

They're fine because gog versions are already updated, they're not 1.0.
Believe me, unpatched Fallout 2 is a bug party.
