New player here with only 11 hours in the game. I don't know if time in the arena adds to the time in game counter, but I have spent a couple hours+ in the arena trying to stop stumbling around like a drunk and flailing madly... It's not working. I struggle to get consistently better in combat and that is somewhat ruining the game for me. Exanima feels like I am Tom Cruise's character in the movie "Edge of Tomorrow" whereby he is killed by the aliens every day, only to be reincarnated each time to try again.
Every time I start to have a good run, making it through part of the first level and getting a few pieces of equipment, meeting Derrin the NPC, etc. I get a sense of creeping doom that my progress witll be lost because I can't freakin' save it (I haven't made it to a check point save or whatever those are, but aspire to someday!) I have started keeping a hand-drawn map so each of my new characters can run to known chest locations and grab gear right away. Starting over each time anew is starting to feel monotonous.
So, down to the nitty gritty of combat: Who uses the direction keys (W = forward, and so on) in conjunction with the mouse, or just the mouse in combat? I am trying to use direction keys to move and swing with LMB. When I experiment with RMB to move in combat, I just get worse. Futhermore, I don't have "finger memory" to accurately hit the direction keys, so I have to glance down at the keyboard, with sometimes fatal results.
I know that the main key to getting more proficient in combat is practice, practice, practice. But I want to practice good techniques, so I am appealing here to the forum for some tips and techiques that are working for others. I'm starting to fear I lack the dexterity to get good at combat, which would be a shame because unless I improve, I'll have to give up on the game. :-(
