once you get back to the area you started and have certain pieces of equipment(bombs possibly). you can return to the first village and the first cave but, they are not changed. even if you have unlocked 3d battles, the battles in the cave is still 2d. the village and the cave too is still 2d. though you will meet a lot of bosses on the field.
