It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).

If the game doesn't start at all:
1. Go to the game's folder (by default: C:\GOG Games\Europa Universalis)
2. Delete the winmm.dll file

If the game starts but crashes because the first video cannot play:
1. Run the game in windows 95 or windows 98 compatibility mode (Right click on the desktop shortcut or europa.exe in the game's folder->Compatibility->checkmark the box that reads "Run this program in compatibility mode for"->select windows 95 or windows 98)
2. You can deactivate the compatibility mode after the game runs one time. I'm not sure why this works, but it does.

If the game runs but does not have music:
1. Download dxwnd from sourceforge (use google)
2. Extract the files into a folder. The folder can go wherever you want, including EU1's folder.
3. Run dxwnd.exe, go to Options, and enable "Expert Mode"
4. Drag and drop the europa.exe file from EU1's folder
5. Go to the tab marked CDAudio
6. Select "Use audio files" and enable "Force track repeat"
7. Click OK. With this method, dxwnd needs to be running for EU1 to play its music. You can have the program begin running at startup (Options->Startup Settings->Run at startup). "Start in system tray" makes the program start in the background.

If the game's edge-scrolling is annoyingly fast:
1. Run dxwnd. If you cannot find it, but it is running, try the hidden icons on the bottom right.
2. Right click "europa" and select "modify"
3. Go to the DirectX tab and change "Renderer" to "OpenGL"
4. Click OK. Do not click try because the renderer will not change.

If you do not want to have dxwnd running in the background, then you can still enable music with mohzy83's winmm (use google to find it). None of the winmm versions worked for me, which is why I recommend dxwnd. If you have any questions about following any of the steps, please feel free to ask. I am having trouble posting with links; I apologize for not posting them here.

I'm going to share my own DxWnd config soon; just waiting on the latest DxWnd release.

UPDATE:

This doesn't seem to work:
3. Go to the DirectX tab and change "Renderer" to "OpenGL"

But you can solve the issue with DxWnd timing tweaks; setting the game to 30Hz FPS, for example.

*UPDATE 2*

ghotik is taking a while to put out the latest DxWnd, so I decided to upload a fix using DxWnd v2.05.93 (the last DxWnd version where MCI_PAUSE worked correctly for this game):

Link to download "Europa Universalis (GOG) fix.rar":

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1-Erd3LamSkikk62DXZ6deo8sRfiiB7qB/

Instructions for using either a DxWnd fix or a Win10 native fix are included in the "_SETUP Europa Universalis (GOG).txt" text file inside the archive.
