Hello,

I started a test run of the game as a fighter but one thing stood out that made me do some research. As a fighter naturally I would carry a weapon and shield. Underground or at night you need a torch to see but cannot equip both a shield and torch. Don't have a torch, can't see, can't hit monsters. This rubbed me the wrong way and makes me hope there is a lantern or spells a fighter can use for light.

Anyway, I've read that a mage/cleric is the best. I would like to be a ranger but honestly, I just want to play the game, see the sights, experience the story and not have to worry too much about skill points and not gimping myself. I don't want to min/max either.

What class or build should I make to enjoy the story with?
I went through the game as a Mage. It was a bit of a struggle at first but became easier as I levelled up. Your best bet is to take a read through the official forums where there are build discussions etc

I am going as a Ranger. I think you get more hp than mana. If you start with 18 or so speed you can outrun beasts. I am going to try a speed run to Bordertown and Blackwater to get to the trainers to save skill points. Only costs 100 dollars to start a skill.
