Hi everyone (especially devs!),

Thank you for this awesome and time-consuming game!

I have now played the game for quite awhile and I have experienced many bugs (while definitely enjoying the game!), This last bug is preventing me from playing further. I will split this post in two sections: One for bug-reporting and one for suggestions/experiences. A lot of these (or all of them) may already have been reported:

As for bugs:

- Sometimes the game will freeze when you move to the next screen and this always forces a restart. When restarting the game all progress in tavern mood is gone. This can also be abused. If the game crashes on the "economic" tavern screen on a day where goods have been delivered reloading the game will give you the same goods again for no cost and stack them with the goods you already received.

- When you level up a character you MUST spent their skill-points right away. If you don't the points are gone the next time you select that character. Also some characters only get 4 points while others get 6. I am uncertain if this is random, a bug or a feature.

- When a mission takes more than one day you will have to repeat the last quest on a given day when you continue on your journey the next day. This can especially be abused when the last quest boosts a stat.

- Many quests (especially later on) seem to be missing dialogue. Sometimes it will just say [monster25] instead of naming a specific creature. Unfortunately I have not written down which current quests are affected by such bugs.

- After having completed one of the final level 8 quests (SPOILER) where my party went beyond the portal to meet up with the old party who were stuck there I can no longer go to the adventure screen. I can only load the tavern, but there is just a continuous loading-screen when I want to venture out again. And there were plenty of level 10 and 11 quests available.

- I don't know it is a bug, but I have been getting very few tavern-quests for expanding the tavern - even though I have been successful in each one. There are no more quests, but I can still only serve 4 different drinks and 3 different dishes. Also it tells me that I can update my bathhouse and my wine-cellar beyond level 1, but I am not getting the option at all.

- A few quests will fail even if you roll a success. For instance I rolled three successes in the Archery winter-game (level 8 quest), but in the text I was beaten and only got the silver-medal in that discipline. Also some quests will simply stop. For instance the quest (SPOILER) where the head of the mage-school has gone missing. The final part of the quest is to reap the rewards, but it just shows a blank page when I try to select the quest in the menu.

As for features:

- Serving the guests quickly becomes a really boring chore. Most guests have a 98%/97% serve chance so I just click and click to get my new quests. Also I have reached tavern rank 13 which is apparently the current maximum so it feels absolute without purpose to serve people. Maybe later on you can hire a waiter or something like that do deal with some of the chores? Or at least give it more purpose.

- People's backstories are fairly short and not very interesting. It also feels really odd to reach their final info at friendship-level 100. I am in the 800's with some people and there is no reward for this whatsoever. I can understand the idea of giving the story ind bits, but I end up not reading them while they give them (because I cannot remember the earlier parts of the story) and then reading the full story when it is available.

- There are so many items that give absolutely no bonuses. For instance I received a (I think) golden plate which gives nothing. I can understand if these are just for selling, but then why incorporate them in the game when the shop still isn't available?

- Many quests give absolutely no hints as to what happens. I have now learned that when a person curses at me I become cursed, but it would be nice if I could see this during the even instead of noticing it during the quest-summary. Also in SO many quests it says that you receive an item of some sorts, but many of these items never show up in your inventory. (This is NOT the actual quest-rewards. They always show up).

- It is cool to have so many different skills but what would be even cooler would be a description of what they do. Right now the sword-skill and bless-skill provide the same amount of attack but (apart from a few quests) there is no noticeable difference between them. When I create a party I simply try to reach a high number in all four categories without paying much attention to what actual skills and items my party-members are using.

I think this is it for now. I hope my feedback is useful. I will gladly provide saves and/or game-files from my stuck party if this can help your further development of the game. Keep up the good work!

Hi there Jespersgaard!

Thank you so much for the detailed feedback, we really appreciate it! We’re really sorry to hear about the blocker issue preventing you from playing further. If you’d like, you’re welcome to upload your game save file so we can take a look in attempts to salvage your data!

When you say ‘the game will freeze when you move to the next screen’, is this from any screen to the next, or specifically when going from the Tavern to the Quest/Map page?

Are you at all tabbing in and out of the game from one browser to another? We have a number of bugs related to this issue.

As for the crash on the economic tavern screen; this has been ticketed and assigned to a developer as ET-1343.

Jespersgaard: - When you level up a character you MUST spent their skill-points right away. If you don't the points are gone the next time you select that character. Also some characters only get 4 points while others get 6. I am uncertain if this is random, a bug or a feature.
At the moment, the level up skill point amount is set up to be randomized. However, the day-expiration issue has been ticketed as ET-1344 and our QA team is looking into this.
avatar
Jespersgaard: - When a mission takes more than one day you will have to repeat the last quest on a given day when you continue on your journey the next day. This can especially be abused when the last quest boosts a stat.
This is a known issue, and has been assigned to a developer as ET-1107.

Jespersgaard: - Many quests (especially later on) seem to be missing dialogue. Sometimes it will just say [monster25] instead of naming a specific creature. Unfortunately I have not written down which current quests are affected by such bugs.
Thank you, I will notify our developers of these encounters! With just a few keywords to go off of, they are able to make the fix on the spot. :)

Do you specifically remember seeing [MONSTER25] written out like that in an encounter? This is intriguing, we’d definitely appreciate a screenshot if you happen to come across this again.

I can only load the tavern, but there is just a continuous loading-screen when I want to venture out again. And there were plenty of level 10 and 11 quests available.
This is a known issue, as the end of the game is still being worked on. We have this written up and assigned to developers as ET-1345.

While we can’t speak on any specific dates, we are currently working on expanding the scope of the game and implementing more of these types of quests!

A question for you - were you playing several of these quests chained up back to back, or one at a time? We have a few bugs based on that behavior so I’m curious if it’s related, or if it’s something new.

We do have plans to have a sort of hirable server or bartender, so stay tuned for that! As far as the serving combo system we currently have in place, it’s great to get the feedback from players like you to really balance and dial-in what makes that feature fun and what makes it redundant. I would like to see more choices thrown into the serving combo myself, such as picking a different item for a patron if they didn’t like an item, for instance (with a faster timer, no doubt!). Giving this feature more weight is definitely something we’d like to do.

There are things we would definitely like to change when it comes to the personal stories. While the stories could be interesting, the way that it is currently delivered is not memorable or as though-provoking at the time it is shown as we would like. We agree that it is legitimately hard to follow personal stories at this time. I’d be really interested in hearing your ideas on how we can deliver personal stories in a way that is memorable, easy to follow, and interesting. As far as rewarding, we also agree, and while we do have some rewards currently in the system for that exact thing, there is no messaging to the player about it (on the to-do list!) Are you on our Discord channel? We chat about these types of things constantly, and our writer Shawn would love to chat more with you about it :) You can find that channel here: http://www.discord.gg/epictavern We hope to see you on there soon!

Jespersgaard: - There are so many items that give absolutely no bonuses. For instance I received a (I think) golden plate which gives nothing. I can understand if these are just for selling, but then why incorporate them in the game when the shop still isn't available?
The reason for implementing this feature even though a shop isn’t available (yet) was to give a taste of full release possibilities. Since many items are encounter related and tied to quests, there was that reason for early integration as well. In future patches, we are definitely working on more interactive uses for these items and their bonuses.

Question - was this item a piece of equipment?

Also in SO many quests it says that you receive an item of some sorts, but many of these items never show up in your inventory. (This is NOT the actual quest-rewards. They always show up).
A feature we are really excited about working on at the moment responds directly to this - in future patches, the quest-centric part of the game (or what we call ‘adventure mode’), will become much more interactive and vibrant in conveying cause and effect based directly on player choices. By better communicating which items hold more importance/significance, we hope that the dialogue won’t seem misleading when encounters say that you receive items that never show up in your inventory.

We agree! Similar to the prior item feature comment, these details and capabilities will definitely expand with further game patches.

The game can freeze between any of the screens. "Freeze" was actually bad wording on my part. It is more of an infinite loading-screen. Moving from the economic screen to the tavern is what most commonly triggers it for me, but again: It can also happen between the other screens, It is NOT from alt-tabbing. I already found out that alt-tabbing is not a good idea at this stage :-P

It may also have been [monster17] or [monster21]. I am 95% sure it was one of those three. I will send you a screenshot if it happens again :-)

Ahh OK. Then my game isn't stuck. I just reached the current end apparently :-)

I am not 100% certain. With a 14-man party I usually try to have 12 people active at a time if possible.

I have already thought of three ways to make them more interesting:
1. Make the stories much longer, but also harder to access. The cap could be 1000 or 2000 friendship-points since the game is so "grindy" in nature. Once the cap is finally reached it could reward one skill-point or the like for ever 100 points.
2. Have people reward you with items when reaching certain friendship-levels; i.e. "I have been saving this heirloom for a special occasion, but now I am passing it on to you as you have become a dear friend and ally."
3. Have people gain new skills when revealing their stories; i.e. "I actually used to work as a healer in a temple". Then this would all of a sudden give them the "First aid" skill and so on.

It was indeed a piece of equipment. Many pieces of equipment currently offer no bonuses. Others are (I think) probably going to be companions later on like "Tinkerbell" from the random encounter which is currently also an item with no bonuses.

I also thank you for taking your time to answer all of my questions and share your thoughts. There is no need to salvage my party as I have apparently just reached the current end. And I probably wont do another play-through until more content is added seeing as I have already beaten most quests and heard most stories. But I will gladly send them if you can benefit from looking at them. Which files should I send you? And is their an email or can I just upload them here on the forum?

Again thank you! I think I will join you on Discord :-)

Ok, as I anticipated, thank you for clarifying. This helps us narrow down the possibilities of what this specific issue is related to, and I do have a couple bugs written up based on back-to-back quest chaining.

Ah ok. Thank you! Yes, a large number of items don’t serve much function at the moment.

We’re so glad you enjoyed playing what is currently available! There’s always good fun in starting a new tavern and making volatile choices, just to see how the story changes. But that might just be me. ;)

You’re welcome to zip, upload and share your whole Epic Tavern game file (on your computer under YourSteamLibraryLocationHere\steamapps\common\Epic Tavern) to our discord which again is at, http://www.discord.gg/epictavern
At the very bottom under ‘Support’ you’ll find the channel bugs_n_glitches; you can upload it there.

We look forward to seeing & and chatting with you there! :)

Hey, @Jespergaard! Are you still experiencing this bug in the newest version EA Build 925? Thank you!

Hey, @Jespergaard! When you press the green "Level Up" button, it will not let you progress until all skill points are spent. If you do not initiate that action, the skill points should still be waiting to be spent. Let me know if you come across any skill point bugs moving forward! Also, to answer your question about the number of skill points, all characters will have between 4-6 skill points to be spent when they level up. Right now this is a random number, however, we might revisit this in the future to be slightly different. Stay tuned!
