I have been playing for a few hours and am pretty lost on the different abilities they all share or how they are different. Any advice on if there is an "easier" one to get started with?
i like to use the hunter, his crossbow is pretty good for the second level if you dont have everything else, also the corgi is usefull for items and to recognice mimics. the pilot is also good with disarming personality, but you may learn to aim better while using the crossbow, maybe

some tips i could give you is to buy keys early,
dont fear to use weapons a bit, sometimes two weapons synergice with each other
keys and health are not stealed

those are some i can immediately recall

(sorry if poopy english, not my first language)
There are a few gameplay rules that aren't initially obvious:

- There are two chests on each floor; one will always contain a gun and one will always contain an item
- If you haven't picked up a key by the time you enter the shop on a floor, the shopkeeper is guaranteed to have at least one key for sale
- If you beat a boss without picking up a gun on that floor, the boss reward drop will always be a gun
- There are secret rooms that can be revealed (e.g. cracked wall) with guns, but must be opened by using blanks. There are rules that govern where they are placed, so you should see some patterns over time if you seek them out!
