I've heard of ancestral ghost versions in another thread with a dead link. I know Bethesda has some files for free. But I just got go's versions. Which are the best to play?

When it comes to Arena you can use the version you get from GOG when you by any Bethesda Game or Arena Setup found at this link.

Since they are pretty much the same

As for Daggerfall I would highly recommend using Daggerfall Setup found at this link.Since it contains alot of patches fixes and mods the improve and fix up the game a lo.Where the free release you get from GOG is kind barebones.

I would also keep an eye on the Daggerfall for Unity Project which has been doing some amazing stuff, its not feature complete yet but it has made a lot of project and once complete will probably be the definitive way to play the game.

Here's a link to that project

Hope this helps.
Arena: There's two reasonable options. 1.06, from Bethesda's website, is the floppy version. It's smaller, and I found it easier to get fully working under DOSBox in Linux, but lacks the voice acting in cutscenes. (I actually prefer *not* to have voice acting in games.) 1.07, the version from GOG, is the CD-ROM version with voice acting. There is one bug in 1.07, where, if you re-visit a main quest dungeon and pick up the item at the end a second time, things can get screwed up, so don't do that (unless you're a speedrunner).

Daggerfall: The version from Bethesda's website is 1.00, I believe, but the download includes the patch to update it to 2.13 (and the installation instructions have you installing that). It is *highly* recommend to run the patch (and any front-end tat makes the install easier likely does so), as the game had a reputation for being ridiculously buggy on release, unless you really want to play 1.00 for historical reasons. I believe the GOG version just installs 2.13 outright. (I would imaging that the "Daggerfall Setup program installs 2.13.)

One more thing: Save early, often, and in multiple slots. This is especially true for Daggerfall; even in its final version, there are still a lot of bugs.

I would like to confirm that both GOG version and DaggerfallSetup are based on 2.13.

Daggerfall offers you 6 save game slots by default. If that's not enough (and this is going to happen fast, if you want to play it safe with respect to dungeon orientation, character and story developement), then you can backup one or all save file folders (save0, ... save5, underneath the main Daggerfall folder), and thus create space for new saves (delete the save files after the backup, but leave the empty folders). You can do this as often as you like.

And read the patch readme (file PATCHED.txt in the main Daggerfall folder), especially the description of the "cheat codes" - at least one of them, ALT-F11 (for surviving the "void" bug) is not a cheat code, but a necessity if you want to enjoy Daggerfall.

@dtgreene: I was pleased to read that at least one person shares my aversion against voice acting in computer games. :-)

Thanks guys for the very thorough answers!
I had this exact questions so glad to find the answers!

It sounds like I'm fine keeping my GOG install of Arena (rather than unintalling it and going for UESP's version) but it sounds like it might be easier to uninstall GOG's Daggerfall and use UESP's file.

I was wondering, is the UESP version of Arena packaged with any "essential" mods that are important to making the game a more pleasant experience (I'm thinking similar to Eye of Argonia/Draw Distance for Daggerfall)? As someone new to the classic elder scrolls games it's hard to determine between which mods are "modernizing" certain partfs of the game while being faithful to the original, and which mods are actually changing things. I'd like the best-looking but most accurate experience.

Thanks!

The UESP site has two links: To ArenaSetup.exe, which is Bethesda's Arena 1.07, bundled with an installation and configuration procedure for DOSBox 0.74 (I have never used ArenaSetup myself, as I always play Arena 1.06 and do the DOSBox configuration manually myself), created by someone called Ancestral Ghost. And to Arena106Setup.exe, which is Bethesda's Arena 1.06.
Arena 1.06: Floppy version.
Arena 1.07: CD version with voiceovers, graphically identical with the floppy version.
I was of the opinion that the two version are identical as far as gameplay is concerned, but dtgreene says she noticed a bug present in the (newer) CD version, so it may well be that 1.07 contains a few other changes, too.
I'm not aware of any Arena mods (unless you call the French translation mentioned on UESP a mod).
If you want the best possible visuals, make sure you set the details to max (ESC opens the options screen after you've started or loaded a game).
