Gog is currently spamming (and has put on sale) TES V: Skyrim "Special Edition".

What exactly are the differences over other versions of the game? I've got an original DVD from 2011, and even bought the game (again!) on the Nintendo Switch when it came out, mostly as it was on sale.

Sure, the textures look upgraded but I don't actually care for that so much. How different are the new versions? Is there more plot? The actual store page is pretty light on details. I'll be playing under Proton in all cases.
The most important difference is that the newer editions have a 64 bits executable, so it does not crash that often if you are using many mods.

The weather effects have been changed (some claim that it's worse, but basically it is not as blurry in the distance when it rains/snows), everything is slightly more colorful (some people claim that the sky looks like candy) and the Creators Club has been forced in the non-GOG version of the game. The last part is really annoying on Steam, since it installs all the CC mods as part of the game even if you don't have them unlocked if you haven't bought them.

They didn't bother to fix the flora respawning issues that they introduced in an early patch or the original edition and the attack/reload shop inventory exploit is still there as well.

That's really helpful to know – thank you. I think I'll probably give it a miss, but it's good to know that there is still love for this game. I still think that Oblivion was the highlight and Skyrim had this vague sense of "Scandinavia written by people who had never been there" but they are all great games.

Thanks!
