Hi guys,

is there any kind of way to beat the zombie golems in castle ravenloft beside using fireballs? The critters appear to be imune to magic and are dern hard hitters. Any ideas?

Use turn undead on them. Works like a charm and sends them spinning. You can then kill them, without them fighting back.
Rumour has it the rod of smiting will automatically destroy one, consuming one of its 12 charges in the process. I've never tested it but when used in normal combat charges do not appear to be consumed and the rod just seems to work as a +3 mace....

That is wrong. The rod of smiting does not insta-kill them. It took my cleric-fighter 4 attacks with the rod of smiting, doing 17 to 24 damage per hit, to slay a zombie golem. And the rod doesn't seem to have charges, because I use it for hundreds of battles and it never runs out of anything.

Agreed. I tested it for the first time yesterday. Interestingly enough the damage inflicted is very high so maybe the code to reduce the charge by 1 is broken and it was always designed to do high damage against golems. Puzzling.
