I googled it and I found some stuff but I couldn't understand how to make it work, so: are there extra maps and campaigns for dk2 online and if so how do I get them to work? I was looking for something a little more challenging than the standard campaign

yeah I did find that and I tried to download one campaign level and put it in the maps folder but I don't find it in the skirmish's maps list, is it possible that it requires a different version or something to install on the game like an editor?
You need to have compatible versions yes, but many maps can only be started through the command line. Edit your shortcut and add: -q -level "LevelName"

Other maps do work though. If you have unmodified GOG (so version 1.7) download the 1.7 version of this map here and it should show up among your skirmish maps.

Thank you very much

to be clear, with the first statement, let's say I want to play a level called citadel, I have to edit the name of my dk2 dekstop icon to

Dungeon Keeper 2 -q -level "citadel"

Did I get it right?

No, not at all. Edit the shortcut itself, not the name of the icon. Right click the icon, click properties, go to the shortcut tab and change the target to (something like): "D:\Dungeon Keeper 2\DKII.exe" -q -level citadel
Thank you very much
