I read the top review and saw the GOG release is actually just the original, not the Gold edition or combination of Deeper Dungeons with the original game. I think that is a bit disappointing and is a bit of a disservice by GOG.

Most of the games I buy on GOG I already own because I either bought them at release or from a bargain bin a couple years down the road. So for GOG to re-release a game and not using the optimal version is a bit of a let down for me.

Ah well, just a bit of a rant I suppose. It probably won't change a thing but it would be great if GOG would release the 'proper' versions of the oldies.
I thought I had heard that trying to get the Gold version to work on new systems would be bloody hard because it was made specifically for old 16-bit systems, or something that like...

DK Gold works in 7 64bit but:

The installer is 16bit so you'll need to install on a 32bit OS and copy over the files.
If you are using WDDM video drivers you need to use ddraw.
If you are using XP video drivers then you can use D3D.
You need to run the game in Windows 95 Compatibility mode
You need to end the explorer.exe process to fix the palette issued caused by Windows 7 with 8 bit color games.

Yeah, I get the feeling it wouldn't be worth GOG's time to configure and post explanations on how to get it working for everyone's os, when they could make a broad sweep with DOSbox. That said, anyone who wants the Gold edition should just go ahead and buy it elsewhere if they can. If you don't want what's on here, that's perfectly fine ... honestly. I'm not interested in the series, yet I hope GoG gets Deeper Dungeons, but even if they don't move on if you have to.

I agree with that statement the_voivod. What disappointed me the most is that I nearly bought the game expecting to get a fully featured version, there is no notion of this being the low-resolution version. I was warned by the top review, but hadn't it been for that I wouldn't have known until I bought the game.

If it is too much work for GoG.com to port the proper version the least I would expect is some kind of notification of which version we are getting exactly.

*sighs* It isn't too much work, they are having issues because the rights to the expansion. I don't know the exact problem they're having, they've mentioned dozens of times on the forums that they are having difficulties with the rights because it is a far more complex then just talking to EA.
