I have the retail version of DKII, and as far as I can remember DKII works fine on NVidia cards with 3D rendering and high resolutions(via registry edit). However, it does not work with ATI cards, the best you can get is software rendering.

So, does the gog version work on ATI?

Originally the game was having serious problems, but GOG improved it with a major patch last year. It may be a small gamble, but it's only 5.99 and you can always contact Support and look through this forum for solutions.

GOG went with the DOS version for compatibility reasons.

I have the GOG version of DKII I can confirm that it works on ATI. GOG released a patch in 2012 to make the game compatible with modern machines.
