It took a while, but I've found a way to get Bullfrog's original Map Editor running.
The only downside is, that it runs to fast on modern machines. You either have to live with the speed up (e.g. sprinting tool tips) or slowing it down somehow (e.g. with 3rd party software like Mo'Slo).

What you need:
A. GOG version of Dungeon Keeper 1 (obviously ;-)
B. Original Bullfrog Map Editor (dkedit.zip)
Unfortunately Electronic Arts "cleaned" its FTP server, hence the original download from Bullfrog is gone. Here are some alternative sources:
- http://afswww.icequake.net/pc/games/dungeon_keeper_ii/mirror/keeper/downloads/dkedit.zip
- http://www.gamefront.com/files/11628177
C. Decompression software like or [url=http://www.7-zip.org/]7zip
D. Dungeon Keeper 1 Demo
- http://www.moddb.com/games/dungeon-keeper/downloads/dungeon-keeper-demo
- http://keeperklan.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=4
- http://download.cnet.com/Dungeon-Keeper-demo/3000-2119_4-10011780.html

How-to:
1. Install Dungeon Keeper and don't use the KeeperFX patch as the Original Map Editor won't work with those files
2. Copy the game's folder to C:\ and name it C:\DK1 (you can copy it elsewhere as long as the path doesn't contain any blanks)
3. Getting the editor files
- The editor installer (dkedit.exe) doesn't work with the GOG version, hence you have to extract the editor files manually
- You can extract the files from dkedit.exe with WinRAR (editor.exe, Data folder, Levels folder etc.)
- If you extract the .exe-file with 7zip, you'll get a file named _cabinet, among others. You can open this _cabinet with 7zip and inside you'll find the files and folders of the map editor. Extract all of them.
4. Copy all the files and folders of the editor directly into C:\DK1 (editor.exe and keeper.exe should now be in the same folder)
5. The editor needs some DLLs to run, that are missing in GOG's version
- Extract the Dungeon Keeper Demo and run the SETUP.BAT
- This will extract all demo files
- Now copy MSS32.DLL, SMACKW32.DLL and WSND7R.DLL into GOG's Dungeon Keeper folder (so that they are in the same folder as editor.exe).
6. Edit KEEPER.CFG in C.\DK1
- Open the file with a text editor, e.g. Wordpad or Editor
- Fill in the game's path at INSTALL_PATH= (here INSTALL_PATH=C:\DK1)
- Now, the game doesn't run anymore with DOSBox, that's why we've installed the editor in a copy of the game's folder
6. Done. Run the editor.

Copy edited maps back to the game's original installation and run the game as usual.

To avoid other problems, you can try running the editor as Administrator and also in Compatibility Mode for the oldest Windows available (the program was designed for Win95).

Just to clarify, you have to extract all files (and folders) to your game's directory (e.g. C:\GOG-Games\Dungeon Keeper Gold). Don't create any custom sub-folders. editor.exe has to be in the same directory as e.g. KEEPER.CFG.

You probably forgot #5: Edit KEEPER.CFG in your game's directory
- Open the file with a text editor, e.g. Wordpad or Editor
- Fill in the game's path at INSTALL_PATH= (e.g. INSTALL_PATH=C:\Gog-Games\Dungeon Keeper Gold)

The editor reads the INSTALL_PATH variable in KEEPER.CFG to find the files. If it asks for the disk, this variable is wrong.

Oooh i see! I had a space in the variable that werent supposed to be there! Now it works! :D
Thanks alot for the nice tutorial! Very helpful information!
You're welcome!
I try to run the SETUP.BAT, but I keep getting the following message:

---

The program or feature..."KDDATA.EXE" cannot start or run due to incompatibility with 64-bit versions of Windows. Please contact the software vendor to ask if a 64-bit Windows compatible version is available.

---

What do I do?

I also followed all the steps DeMignon outlined but the 64 bit issue occurs. Is there a way to fix this?

The forum user devilhood provided a file (a self-extracting archive and alternatively a 7zip file) for another fix, that contains all three DLLs (MSS32.DLL, SMACKW32.DLL and WSND7R.DLL). They're the same as those from the Dungeon Keeper demo.
Download links: Self-extracting version / 7zip file

Alternatively you could download the KeeperFX mod, which contains the files as well:
http://keeperklan.com/downloads.php?do=file&id=91
(But it's over 300 MB)

if you open the Keeper Demo exe file with winrar, you can also view these files and extrat them!

I did that, and I can run the editor, however I am running into the issue of it running way too fast with no speed limit (camera scrolling is extremely fast as well as text scrolling) which makes it very uncomfortable to use :/
Pretty sad, running into administrator/compatibility mode doesn't seem to fix it. Then I saw about using "Mo'Slo" program that can slow down DOS programs on Windows, but it doesn't seem to work on windows 7. (can't run the installer of Mo'Slo).

Additionnally the GOG version of dungeon keeper doesn't run at a very good FPS either. It's playable, but doesn't feel so smooth. I think the game ran better on windows 95 with old computer.. :(

Edit: It seems the game runs properly using the KeeperFX unofficial patch. It's better than gog version. It is disapointing that Gog version doesn't have editor and doesn't run that well.. The editor doesn't work with KeeperFX files, but I guess it's still possible to make maps for this game with it by putting it in an extra Keeper folder with non KeeperFX files and putting up with the sped up bugs things which make the editor really uncomfortable. All in all not a great situation for making maps for this game :( And bit tough to assemble the proper stuff to make it play well. Bit sad about it!

You're linking to version 0.4.0 of KeeperFX, it's pretty old. Go for KeeperFX 0.4.6 or better yet, KeeperFX Unofficial.

The best editor to use is ADiKtEd, but the official editor works as well. If you want to slow it down, google for 'Advanced Game Loader', that runs on windows 7/10 as well.

Thank you for your recommendation loobinex, I will try the slowing down thing, would love to be able to use this editor. I will try the ASCII one if it doesn't work for me. As for KeeperFX, I have the unofficial installed, it runs well however I think that it doesn't have the improved AI, am I right? When I played gog version, though it didn't run so good and felt uncomfortable, the computer had this more aggressive behavior that makes it more interesting to play against, I think this is missing from KeeperFX unofficial ? Computer seems to kinda only build and walls themselves in in KeeperFX? [is this me having a wrong impression, can you confirm KeeperFX unofficial has the improved AI? not seeing a mention in readme etc]

As far as I know, GOG has no improved AI, it is simply the game from 20 years ago in a DOSBOX shell.

Compared to the GOG release, KeeperFX has seen several AI improvements, and the Unofficial release is the latest release there is with all the software there. If you are simply looking at the change-list for unofficial, you'll see a list where the unofficial release differs from the main and abandoned KeeperFX branch, not he whole list of changes (which is including basic rewrites into open source, a list of over 1700 issues long).
When you play a skirmish map on KeeperFX (Unofficial) you should see a difference in that the AI will train their units better, shows less self-destructing behavior, assigns units to proper rooms etc. Though the AI behavior is complex, I don't want to rule out you've seen a situation where the old AI somehow does better than the new one.

Another think to take into consideration, is that there are several AI's to choose from for the mapmaker, and on many maps the mapmaker might have chosen a passive one. If you look at the first few levels of the main campaign for example you'll notice the AI hardly does anything. So if you are comparing a map with a full AI to a map with a limited AI, that could also explain your observation.
If you've played the original campaign before and are using Unofficial, why don't you run the New Game+ campaign instead, it's more or less an exact copy of the original campaign, but with sped up early levels and a bit more aggressive computer opponents in the mid-levels.
ok I read different somewhere, that gog version ended up including a patch that has the improved AI. But upon playing KeeperFX more it seems similar after all, it could just be I got different result on the first few missions because of how I played myself.
Good stuff for KeeperFXunofficial, it's good that it's there cause man gog version runs poorly.
Now to see if I can make some maps!! xD
The AI of the original release of Dungeon Keeper was really poor. However, a while later a patch appeared that improved it. This patch was included with Dungeon Keeper Gold and the Deeper Dungeons, which is the version that is available on GOG. Perhaps that is what you read.

KeeperFX also started out from Dungeon Keeper Gold.
