Bought DK1 in the recent sale (free Witcher too, yay - I already have it on Steam but nice to have a GOG copy) and simply cannot get into it. Is it just me or do the messy jerky graphics make it to keep track of moving mobs and items? I actually wish the graphics were simpler; at least items would stand out then.

I'll have to reinstall it and try it out. Haven't played it since the late 1990s but remember it being fine then. I'll have to see how well it has aged.
Have you tried pressing ALT+R in the game? - this should change the resolution and make things look a little better.
I thought the same until I changed to hi-res, like MrCoprophage said try pressing ALT+R and increasing the DosBox cycles a bit - looks a lot better, especially if you zoom out a little.
To help with the graphical confusion, there are two options that can help: Straight angles mode, and short walls. In-game,press the button beside your map that looks like a "Q",after that, click the mirror. In there, you should have five buttons available to you. One looks like a wavy pillar. Click it to straighten all angles. This also locks the map view to 90 degree angles. The short walls button should look like a pillar with vertical arrows beside it. Click, and the walls are shortened so you can see what's going on behind them, provided you have line of sight.

Personally,I never knew about the high res toggle. Made three playthroughs of the GOG version without it,and was very merrily hacking my way through goodly heroes and rival keepers in nostalgic bliss. Now I gotta make another playthrough in HD! Or what passes for HD with DK.
Does anyone know how to just get the damn game to run in scaled or fullscreen mode besides just the 2x or 3x scaler engine modes? I want to see it run in HD (Alt+R) scaled up afterward by DOSbox so it's playable on a decent 24" LCD. Shouldn't you be able to resize the DOSbox window while running the game?
