So this game's save system is, simply put, ridiculous. It makes one save and tosses everything in there, from your character to game settings and so on.

The biggest issue here is that the game does not create a backup every time it saves, so in case the save corrupts for whatever reason, it can't fall back on a backup save. This of course means that aside from losing your settings, your level 200 character could be lost in a blink of an eye.

I was surprised today with just that: Loading the game and it asking me to configure my settings. I instantly knew my save was no longer working. The game already tossed my save away and it was not present in the recycle bin.

Now I've been manually keeping backups, so I 'only' lost 3-4 hours of play time, but I can imagine not everyone doing this. It'd be something, having played for 50 hours and having to start over again. I'd probably write the game files to an empty DVD just for the pleasure of breaking said DVD.

So, really, do yourself a favour and backup that save now and then. It's stored in
C:\Users\<your user name>\AppData\Local\GOG.com\Galaxy\Applications\49987265717041704\Storage\Shared\Files

And to CAPCOM, seriously guys, what were you thinking. Next time, do what about every other game developer in the universe does: Store the game's settings in a nice separate file and if you ARE going to be pesks and limit your players to only one save, at the VERY LEAST have the game create a backup of that save everytime it saves, just in case things wrong, and a backup OF THAT BACKUP for the heck of it.

Unbelievable.
I kinda hope I lose my save one day so I have an excuse to buy the steam version that works better apparently lol

I read that you can just use your gog save for the steam version, since the games are the same.
I wish I got the Steam version as well though. I've been wanting to throw my pawn out there; a shame that gog and capcom can't seem to make it work.
But to buy the game again... no, it has way too many flaws, I don't want to spend more money on it. It's entertaining, but I can't fathom some of the game's poor design choices.
Yeah, I hate the single save idea. So I checked out the Nexus mods and there's a save manager there that allows you to keep multiple saves. Haven't tried it out yet, but I'll be installing that sucker tonight.
what a relief you had a backup, ive been in your position with other games and unfortunately lost all my progress. most times I just quit the game permanently. will someone explain to me why devs are employing the one save function in more and more games?

thanks for this post, im sure it will help many players. another option is to use this mod which allows multiple saves during gameplay, as many as you wish and its automated.
