This topic is a little bit complicated, so please keep in mind I'm not a native English speaker.

The automap feature in Dragon Wars is mapped to the '?' key.

I'm using a ABNT format keyboard (which is the standard in Brazil) and in this keyboard, the '?' is actually 'shift' + '/', meaning there is no '?' key, it's a modifier dependent key.

The game doesn't seem to recognize it. I've tried to press every key in the keyboard, but none would bring up the automap. Actually using 'shift' + '/' doesn't do anything.

Can anyone help me? I suppose Brazil is not the only country with a weird local standard for keyboards.

Maybe try using DOSBOX's mapper to remap the problematic key to something that is on your keyboard?
You can change to English/American keyboard from Control Panel. I recall having to do that when using an Apple emulator.

Do you have any details on how this is done? Is it a file I can edit (like a .ini file)?

I would try setting the keyboard layout first. Also, mapper link.

Thank you so very much for your help. I could have never figured it out without your help and the help of dtgreene and PetrusOctavianus. I seriously wish I could mark multiple answers as the best answer just to express my gratitude to everyone who tried to help. Now I can finally play this amazing game!!

Just so other may possibly use my experience for their own benefit, here`s exactly what I did:

First, I went into the language settings and added English keyboard as an option.

Then, I went into the dosboxDragonWars.conf file in the game folder and changed the value of keyboardlayout to br850

Actually messing around with the Mapper wasn't necessary, I guess. Anyway, it's a blast to finally be able to play the game. I believe the keyboard layout change is what did the trick (since I'm now able to use the '?' key in-game with the keyboard set to ABNT-2), but I'm mentioning the keyboard language setting change because I'm not 100% sure that didn't help in any way and it doesn't break anything either, so who knows, right?
