Both ways around the main hall are blocked (fire / rubble) and the door in the main hall is locked.
I have backtracked multiple times trying to find a lost door or similar but I cannot progress.

You exit the main hall through the door on the opposite side to where you entered. (The main hall has 3 doors.)
From there you go left, right, and left again, and you should see your father in the larder.
