Maybe you should give this wads a chance, listed as brutal doom addons, but they work just fine on their own.

Sounds totally awesome.

stephenflatt: I remember in times of yore, the no music problem was caused by not having the CD inserted.

Thiev: At the moment I cannot replicate the issue, I have music in every install.
No music for me either. Win 8.

Yeah, major bummer. Can't find any way to get the music. Or to rebind keys, but maybe I'm just missing that.

I'm afraid this isn't playable without the music - that was one of the major charms 22 years ago...

[EDIT] OK, manually re-selected "Soundblaster" from the setup util, and that fixed it. Also remembered that's where you go to rebind keys. Man, 1993 was a long time ago, LOL!

[EDIT 2] And now hilariously, my HUD has disappeared. Completely. Any ideas how to get that back?

[EDIT 3] I am so retarded. Increasing screen size to max disables the HUD. Shrink it down one notch to get it back. :)

growing old sucks don't it?
When I captured the footage for my Tweak Guide, I also had no music!

Re-selecting music device in the SETUP program solved it. This might not affect everyone, but it's an easy workaround.

Doom's General MIDI music is somewhat of a holy relic to me. It's the source of so much nostalgia. Thanks for the info, I didn't realize you could run the setup utility and change back to General MIDI. Cheers! Once more rocking those Slayer riffs copypasted into 12-measure blues progression, lol :D

In my opinion really, the default sound source this GoG release uses, is nowhere as good as General MIDI. I can't understand why it was even chosen! The drums are almost nonexistent in comparison, for example. Still, a great release and works perfectly. Good stuff, GoG!
No music for me as well. Found this thread, launched after manually selecting sound blaster in settings, force fullscreen as it launches in windowed mode, and bam it works. However, upon subsequent launches music is gone again. Has anyone found a way to cause this change to persist so that the game can be launched from the shortcut rather than settings/music settings/sound blaster/ save and launch Doom II/Alt-Enter force fullscreen/ while still retaining the music?
I heartily encourage anybody with music issues to ditch DOSBox and get a source port. Especially recommended are Chocolate Doom for getting the next best thing to vanilla Doom, PrBoom+, or [G]ZDoom.

Solved

The Gog version of Doom have a setup file. You have to open Dos Box, mount your Doom folder manually, open the setup file, set up a sound blaster card on port 220 (default for Dos Box) and voilà.

Note: The FX card is set alright in that setup file, hence the fact you only have the sound effects.

Note: What GoG needs to do is to make sure the files installed on our computers come pre-installed with the DosBox setup.

PS: Boy, setup programs, way to dive into early 90's nostalgia... as if playing DOOM wans't enough by itself :P
I know this is necro, but has anyone found a way to get the General MIDI to work by this time? I'm on Windows 10 (x64), with CoolSoft VirtualMIDISynth, cannot get GM to work, even after setting the 'midiconfig=' parameter in the dosbox_doom.conf, which is, by default, blank. Cannot and will not listen to SB MIDI. I have the GM working on every single other DOSBox game I own from GOG (that is to say, 27 out of 28), except for DOOM, and before you try to preach, no, I do not have time to talk about your lord and savior, Source Port. I want to play the game as GOG intended; through DOXBox; it just feels more authentic that way.

Edit: Got it to work. I don't know how, but I got it to work. I launched the "Launch Settings" shortcut, set Music Card to "General MIDI" with Address 330, and changed the last parameter of the FX Card from 8 to 5, even though it was initially working fine, and MIDI worked all of a sudden. And it's consistent, too.
