Hello, I worked on D3HDP for almost a year, and finally managed to kill all graphic issues of the game, merging fixes from RoE to original campaign and enhancing a lot of surfaces, using lighter format for textures and even higher resolution, also many mistakes in original maps has been fixed, added new details.
It's a complete retexture project for original campaign, Roe and Lost Mission mod in 2,2 gb with many optional addon, Alpha weapons, phrozo particles, etc. It works great on original engine, even better on dhewm3 engine with very fast loading time.

Demonstration on Lost Mission:

Cool, looks awesome :)
There is graphic mods for both versions of Doom 3. Some gamers may enjoy the pad functionality on Doom 3 BFG, but with a custom engine https://dhewm3.org/ or https://zdoom.org/downloads it may even work on the old classic Doom 3. However, i would not use a custom engine there, because for a reason you are playing the "original" and the old engine still works great on Win 10.

The updated graphics are good for both games, however, i got the feeling the modders was doing better work on the old Doom 3 Classic and the lighting got a higher diversity... so it is somewhat the "supreme version".

I think it is not the modders fault, the reason is most likely because Doom 3 BFG is a "normalized" version with a less valiant lighting but to some gamers "more accessible". The old Doom 3 Classic was actually a pretty dark game with a pretty playful attitude when it comes to lighting-effects. Although, at the time they updated the old Doom 3 to the more "console friendly" and "mainstream-consumer-friendly" version, known as Doom 3 BFG including 2 Classic-Versions, they was kinda stripping out the more "feisty" part of the Doom 3 Classic; i assume for most of the fans it was rather a nightmare. However, both versions are good games... and with pretty good graphics, when updated.

For Doom 3 BFG, the best graphic mods i found so far is:

Ultimate HD V. 2.1, remember to update to V. 2.1.1 https://www.moddb.com/mods/doom-3-bfg-ultimate
Wulfen Texture Pack https://www.moddb.com/mods/wulfen-texture-pack

Generally the Doom 3 BFG mod is still missing many improvements, so this is not nearly finished yet. I was simply installing the Ultimate HD mod first. Unpacking Wulfen Texture Pack after and then overwrite the Ultimate HD install, so i should have to most complete version we got available yet.

Actually i had an issue with he engine, because it was malfunctioning with the one provided with the Ultimate HD mod. Most likely because my game is a newer version and the mod still is using a old custom engine. So i got me the updated custom engine; overwriting the old engine and then the game worked for me.

The newest custom engine can be found here: https://github.com/RobertBeckebans/RBDOOM-3-BFG
Which seems a pretty advanced engine, but of course it may lack the "original feeling". simply perfect for the BFG because there is no such intention.

Absolute HD was my favorite mod back then and the only available mod in 2010-2015, but it's obsolete right now graphically speaking, especially for BFG. It never solved original bugs, but only pushed on easier gameplay with impressive sounds and quick fire rate for weapons.
For BFG Edtion the best mod still Doom 3 BFG Hi Def, soon will be available new v4.0. This in conjuntion with newest RBDOOM-3-BFG.
For retail edition I collaborated with the whole community to solve all the issues and default mistakes (those are still presents on BFG in major number). The result is flawless because we solved all problems of hd models and new hd textures, adding even new details to original maps. Using original format would be like 7-8 gb, but using new format the complete pack is actually only 2,18 gb, the most complete retextured pack for all 3 official campaigns.
This because we got some BFG Edition additions, some details for original maps ( sun light upon Mars City hangar gates, reflective glasses, better shadows, enpro architecture, delta labs fixes etc.,) without changing gameplay.
The next other much awaited update is about Redux Mod v2.1 by Lord Strelok, always for retail Doom 3.

Doom 3 BFG: Hi Def 3.2 is not working for me. Ultimate HD 2.1 with new engine did the trick.

For the Classic Doom 3: I use D3HDPv2. No custom engine. https://www.moddb.com/mods/d3hdp-doom-3-essential-hd-pack/downloads/d3hdp-doom-3-essential-hd-pack-v20 Should be yours...

As far as i can remember, the Hi Def 3.2 for Doom 3 BFG was using a custom engine, although probably outdated and incompatible. I had serious graphical glitches up to the point even the entire game was malfunctioning.

I guess i will try out the 4.0 version of Hi Def when released, this one may work properly. Right now i am pretty fine with the Ultimate HD 2.1 but this mod is simply not completed and it may be abandoned in 2017.

Yes, I lately updated D3HDP V2.0 the 21 march 2023.
About Bfg, both mods, Absolute HD BFG and BFG Hi Def use the same modified engine: RBDOOM3-BFG, it's also the only software that allows us to add HD mods. Hi Def after installation requires to be overwrited by latest rbdoom3 build to be played, I guess it will be valid also for upcoming v4.0. But sincerely I'm actually not aware of such problems. Unfortunately, some bugs on maps and graphics has been inherited by BFG Edition from Classic Doom 3 (all fixed in D3HDP), and no one fixed these problems in 11 years.
