I just really got into this game and its just awesome. Its got everything I like about diablo 2 but more emphasis on story. Definitely a keeper.

Im going to ask a question about how I want to place my stats every level. I usually in games like this, like to place a regimented stat per level that i kind of go on all the time.

I want to play a survivor for roleplaying purposes and so I'd like anyone's interpretation on stats per level. I was thinking if I go an offensive path, I could do 2 strength, 2 dexterity, and 1 vitality per level. However, If I wanted to go defensive, should I go 1 strength, 2 dexterity and 2 vitality for a more defensive path.

Im really not sure and so anyone that has an idea on leveling, I would like to know what you think for a melee fighter. I'll avoid strength altogether unless survivors need it. Any ideas?

I got bored with Diablo 2 and never finished playing. I tried Divine Divinity when the demo was released. The exploration / quests / NPCs in Aleroth were enough to show how much better the game was, and an encounter in the catacombs made it a day one purchase for me.

I varied my stat points based on bonuses and requirements on equipment I found (or sometimes bought). Especially at the beginning of the game, what you need most can change based on your equipment.

Playing a warrior I averaged 2 points to strength, 2 to agility and 1 to constitution. However, at the beginning of the game I usually put 2 or more points in constitution each level until that and hit point equipment bonuses meant I couldn't be killed from a couple good hits from a strong opponent. Once I reached that level I stopped boosting constitution entirely; better equipment was easily able to keep up with stronger opponents (and in the mid game I also used Aura of Guarding and Spell Shield for awhile, maxed with purchased spell books).

A survivor will need strength for equipment requirements, but not much in excess of that (a warrior gets a better damage bonus per strength point). I started a game with a survivor on hard, but got distracted and never got back to it. Presumably a survivor would need a little more constitution than a warrior, given the slightly lower vitality bonus they receive from that.

Thanks for that description. I read a little from that thread and it seems that you can get a hefty defense/offense bonus when survivor when you hit that special level that is listed in chart. I was thinking if it would be possible to forget strength, go the backstab route and put 3 into dexterity and 2 into vitality. That would be cool because you've got both defenses and offense to with high too hit chance.
I never tried that, but a high agility will at least partly compensate for a low strength (and therefore limited armour possibilities), and more constitution can counter taking more damage when you do get hit. Mid game when you can survive in the Dark Forest (entrance to the far south on the first map, west side), the merchant there sometimes sells mythril armour, which has a high armour class without any strength requirements (it will show up in random loot, as well, but not frequently). Actually, I'm not sure how low a level you could get to the elven village at; sticking to the paths would limit your exposure to opponents, and sneaking would help.

IIRC there is only one unique dagger consistently in the game (DD is fairly biased towards swords), so you'll be reliant on found or purchased weapons. Even with Backstab maxed you will not reach the average damage of the best swords in the game, though maximizing DPS really isn't necessary, and Poison Weapon would help with damage, as well.
I found Stun helpful with my warrior.

I was able to make it to Verdistis with a new character. run run and run some more. Then RUN!
I just want to thank you Raze. I decided Im going to stick with 1 strength, 2 dexterity and 2 vitality per level for a devensive rogue that wields swords or something else. Im sick of assassin builds so daggers are out, fighters are the way to go.

I was going to ask if you work for Larian studios as I rarely go on my account for their website. I might have to go on a bit more when their new game comes close to coming out. I heard that its isometric view like this game which is awesome.
I joined the Larian forum just after DD was first released, and hung out there until they hired me early this year (Larian forum moderator and community ambassador).

Divinity - Original Sin will be isometric (announcement blog post), and is set before the events of DD.

Thats awesome man! I was a moderator in NY for an intern and its a lot of fun. So good to hear that its working for you. Im looking to getting a position like that in another company, hopefully one as cool as Larian or another medium sized company.
