Hello, I am a newby gamer but old person. I have limited experiences with games like the elder scrolls and the Kotor(s) and a couple of Final Fantasy ones, along with icwind dale and baulders gate, over the last four-five years only. The past three years I have played online MMORPGs and The Witcher
(my absolute favorite). My computer literacy is medium, better than I know how to turn it on, worse than go and insert this line of code in subfolder blah blah. :) I have Win7 -64.

I have downloaded the original DD this past Thursday, and now I have questions that i cannot seem to find answers for about mechanics in the game. I have tried to read as many responses here as seemed applicable and I went to the forums for the game maker as well. It's just that some things are just not all that clearly explained about this game, so I am asking for help. I am still in the first map, it is about one-half uncovered, still on my first playthrough, of course.

1. Just exactly how do I use the bomb/trap things (eggs, scorpion somethings)?
2. I now have potions lvl 2 or 3 and I still don't have a reliable way to make the ones I need, any advise here? Where are the supplies? Have I just missed merchants somewhere?
3. I read that talking to folks (NPCs) in the wrong order or way can kill a quest, is there a reliable way to determine when that is going to happen? I am afraid to do anything beyond killing snakes and spiders at this point. I have the quests for the farming area and the regular ones for the military and the ones about castle and abbey. I just cannot find who to talk to and in what order for the most benefit.
4. If I kill a thing (corpse, wasp, orc, whatever) will it respawn or is there a limit to how many of these things there are?

If these questions are answered elsewhere, i am sorry I somehow missed it. Thank you in advance for your reply

To answer you questions in order:

1. To set a trap, to need Deadly Gift skill, made active. Using the skill (like any other active skill) will make a submenu with available traps appear. Choosing the trap and right-clicking on the ground will set a trap in that place.

2. To make a potion, you need Alchemy skill and an empty flask in your inventory (small for minor potions, large for major, etc.). Stand next to the herbs/mushrooms, open inventory and drag the flask over them. The herbs will disappear and the potion will be standing in their place.

3. This I cannot answer, but I wasn't aware of anything regarding talking order during my playthrough(s) and didn't run into any problems.

4. There is no respawning in DD.

Regarding 1&2, you may also look into manual that is in your game folder. All skills are described there, including ways of using them. Or post your questions here and I'm sure someone will try to answer them :)
Regarding 3, if you have problems with specific quests, you may check relevant parts of walkthroughs, i.e. there or there. Or post here as well, just with more details.

Thank You Thiev for helping

1. thanks, that does help, is there a time delay or are these traps immediate?

2. yes, i was not clear here, i am not finding the bottles to make the potions in.

3. i have accidentally killed a dog and 11 bees, now according to some folks around here and the developer site, this means I can expect trouble from all dogs and all bees. I have already been attacked and killed by bees in game. :) Now I read somewhere that doing things like this messes the game up and makes it un-completable if it is with the quest line. That is what I want to avoid if I can. I guess i can just run from bees and dogs though.
4. Thank you, I had wondered. This means that eventually I could run out of exp fodder and flora for potions, right?

Hi cooper, I didn't use the traps too much when I played, they are so powerful (scorpion traps) that they almost seem like a cheat. I set them, left the area and when I came back they had done their work.

Here is some info (from here) about traps

"Create a dangerous trap for your enemies to blunder into. This powerful skill allows you to create your own traps. There are three types of traps available in Divine Divnity: Spider mines, Trail bombs and Death Scorpions. To be able to use any of these traps, you first need to find or buy the corresponding objects in the game. For spider mines, these are little eggs. For trail bombs, it is a small sack containing a highly explosive powder. For death scorpions, you need a small cage containing the scorpion. Once you have acquired any of these objects, selecting the deadly gift skill will pop up a submenu of available traps. Click on any of the icons in the submenu to select a trap as your currently active trap. Now right-click in the world to use your trap."

Bottles for potions can be found but their appearance can be less often then I like.
Here is some info on what makes the potions. If you just want to enjoy the game you can use the dupe cheat to dupe your potions and gold. Your choice but handy in a tight spot . . . =)

I did the same, killing a dog, on my first play through. No way to change it . . .once you have killed a dog or cat, they always attack. Bees are rare so not that much of a problem since they are supposed to attack anyway, only when recruiting the Imp, supporting the bees or hornets, is it important not to kill any bees. I just slay the digital critters since there is not other solution that I am aware of.

Hope this helps . . . =)

Edit: If you have a save before you killed a dog, you could load that and continue but most folks don't want to go back that far.

Thanks for the reply! I have saved those two characters until later in an alternative save file, then I started a new one. Now I can sell the traps and just save a few for later, so that helps quite a bunch!

This character is doing much better so far, empty bottles are everywhere, although I have mysteriously lost half of my reputation points in the last two saves--- hmmmm? Well two saves is about an hour so... back we go!

I am going to attempt not to kill any wolves, dogs or kitties and see if that helps. The wasps have to watch out though, because they are always going to be on my hit list-- child hood trauma-- nothing gonna change it :)

Now , How do I put points in for helping for both of the reply -ers? Silly computers can only take one answer to a question- How binary can you get?
I will publicly acknowledge that both replies are great! Thank so much!
