I just started the game, and I find that this is a pretty common and annoying bug (or oversight?)

When an NPC initiates a conversation with my party, everything works fine, and my AI partner makes their own decisions.

However, when it comes to the dual dialogues, you know, those dialogues you get from the yellow exclamation marks? Here's what happens:
I highlight my main character, to make sure I'm controlling them, and click on my partner to discuss a recent event. The dialogue box then pops up, but my AI partner seems to be the one initiating the conversation, and thus, I have to control what they say.

I know if I manually control my AI partner and talk to people, I get to control what they say, but I made sure to choose my main character first. What's up with this?
