My game screen is stretched to large even when I lower resolution (although I have a 1024x600 screen resolution) The word "Divine" is completely off the screen in the loading/start up screen and when I go to start a new game the character info is cut off at the bottom. Any suggestions to fix?
This question / problem has been solved by Stuffimage
The background images for the loading and main menu screens are at 640x480, 800x600 and 1024x768, so at a game resolution the same as your desktop, you should have the background displayed fully with black bars on the sides of the screen in the menu, while the game itself should be full screen (with enough of the fog of war cleared, or during a cutscene when it is not displayed).

In the Divine Divinity folder, open the config.div file in Notepad (or other text editor) and if it is set wrong, manually change it to 1024x600 (or another 1.7 aspect ratio resolution).

I would be very interested to know if the 1024 x 600 res fixes the problem as I need to update or delete the info in my post. See the bottom of this post under "Netbooks".

It is my understanding that using any horizontal res over 800 would force the game to use the 1024 x 768 start / menu screens. This was mostly a problem on netbooks as any vertical res above 768 could handle the larger menus / start screen.

Because of this, I have been suggesting that you can only play DD . . on a computer with a 600 or less vertical res . . at 800 x 600 (or less) because of the forced use of the larger start / menus that horizontal res's above 800 cause. A horizontal res of 800 or below will cause DD to use the smaller menus / start screen which are not clipped by a vertical res of 600.

Obviously I need to change my post and advice if the 1024 x 600 res does not force the larger menus as it does on other (some ??) netbooks . . . =)

Thanks guys, I read the "netbook" thread to get some iddeas as I am attempting to play on a toshiba netbook. the problem definately seems to be that the game is opening in 1024x768. I open the config.div file and it list the resolution as 1024x600 which is my screen size. Although oddly enough it doesn't let me manual alter the config.div file if I try to adjust it, it always tells me access denied when I go to save (the file does not seem to be read only).

I can't even get past the character selection screen. I assume there is a button towards the bottom of the screen that allows me to "select' or "continue" to the next screen but it i can't click it because the screen is stretched to far.

If you would . . try setting the res at 800 x 600 to see if the game will give you access to the menu buttons and allow game play. That is what most folks using netbooks with a 600 vertical res have had to do in order to play the game. You should be able to use the "Configuration" icon that is in the game menu (Start,Programs, GOG, Divine Divinity) or right click the configtool.exe located in the DD install directory, click "Run as an administrator" and select 800 x 600 from the dropdown.

If you have installed the game in Program Files Windows may block you from editing the config.div files. You might try turning UAC off temporarily to see if you can edit the file. Sometimes you can copy the config.div file to the desktop, edit it, and copy it back into the DD install directory confirming an over-write (keep a backup copy). I would suggest you install in a directory outside of Program Files (see the install tips post ) if you cannot edit the file. I assume you are using an admin account

If 800 x 600 stretches / distorts the screen too much you may need to right click the game shortcut, click properties, click the Compatibility tab and disable some items. (see attached) Depending on your video card you might also need to disable scaling. The option is different for every card so you might have to hunt for the option. See the Nvidia Control Panel in the attached for an idea of what the setting might look like.

Edit: BTW, it is only the start screen / menus that clip, the game itself will be at the selected or manually set resolution. Only the fact that you can't see the "OK" buttons make DD unplayable. If you had gotten into the game itself you would see that it fits the monitor correctly . . =)

If you turn UAC off I would suggest you turn it back on after you get the game running.

When I said 'should' I was talking theoretically, rather than practically. Since the game isn't doing what it should be doing (ie only going by the horizontal dimension), apparently netbook resolutions were not anticipated when the widescreen support was added.

good advice, I thought I had tried to changed the resolution to via configtool too 800x600 but then I realised it wasn't saving the change in the .div. I ran the "configtool" as administrator and it worked.

Unfortunately the gameruns very choppy and unresponsive. gonna need to do some more research
THanks stuff. you tips in the "othersettings" file did the trick. dissabled vissual themes and desktop composition and that did the trick. very helpful

You're welcome. Thank you for the feedback as well. Glad you got it up and running as I'm sure you will enjoy it. Last time I played DD I got around 60 hours of game-play . . . =)

Edit: BTW, the only problem I have had with the 1.005A release was a save corruption. I stopped using "Quick Save" (CTRL- S) and started using only the "Save" key (S) and had no further corruptions.
