So I have this Windows 98SE computer with a 3dfx card. I tried installing DD with my original CDs but it would always crash on exit and I had to restart the PC to get out of the error message.

So I got DD on GOG, installed it on a WinXP machine, and copied the files over to the Win 98 machine. The game works and no longer crashes on exit, but the config tool no longer gives me an option to select between Glide, D3D and software. It only lets me choose a resolution.

Is there a file I could edit to make Glide the default?

Games released after 1999 do not depend on Glide so I suggest trying the DirectDraw mode if the Direct 3D doesn't work well for you. DD was released in 2002.

I should first say that the old configtool.exe is not supported or recommended by Larian Studios or GOG for use with the GOG version of DD. So, use at your own risk.

You can copy the old configtool.exe from your CD or download the old config tool from here. I would backup the existing tool or rename it before copying the old tool to the DD install directory. Once you have it in the DD directory, double click it and you should see the option you are looking for. (See attached image) It seems to work without any problems even though there is no support for the tool. . . . =)

Edit: The resolutions were limited with the old configtool.exe. If your monitor res is not supported you can set your game resolution manually by going to the DD install directory and finding a file named config.div. Open it with notepad and look for the following lines -

// display width
width 1280

// display height
height 1024

Change the numerical values only to your monitors resolution. Make sure you enter the right value for width and height as reversing the height / width values will not work properly.

When you open the game the start menu will never be larger than 1280 x 1024. If you have a high res monitor it will always have a large black border around it. The game screen will fill the monitor depending on the res you entered. Some folks thought the res was off due to the limited size of the start menu.

Also, when you first begin a game at high res your character will be rather small surrounded by a large area of black. This is normal with the fog of war receding as you move your character around. Eventually the full screen will be cleared of the fog of war until you move out of the cleared area. I found 1280 x 1024 ( or near that ) to be my preferred size, any higher and the characters / text were just too small.

Hope this is not TMI, rather give you too much as not enough . . . =)

Thanks! Copying the config tool solved the problem and am now running in Glide successfully!

That's great, good info as well. After thinking about it actually having a 3dfx card might require the Glide mode even if the game does not. Maybe other community members will add some comments concerning their use of the Glide mode. . . =)
I do know about the Zeckenseck glide wrapper that let's a game think you have a 3dfx card. With the wrapper, you could then use glide mode.
I read somewhere that Glide mode actually does some really pretty graphical stuff that D3D doesn't, but I can't recall what the details were. Does anyone know?

Back in 1996ish to late 1999/early 2000 Glide was what D3D is today. It was dominating all games, and while D3D existed back then, it was buggy and slow, while Glide was fast and had the best graphics, at the same time. You could only use Glide with a 3dfx card (or a Glide wrapper like are available today).

Since Divine Divinity was released in 2002, 2 years after 3dfx was bankrupt and bought out by nVidia, I doubt they put much time into Glide to make it look better than D3D (considering D3D was a lot more mature and actually a viable option by that time), but I still love Glide :)

Sure, I knew the history behind it (I had an awesome Voodoo3 card back in the day). I just recall reading somewhere recently that when you run DD in Glide mode you get some graphical effects that aren't present in the D3D implementation. I seem to recall that it had something to do with lighting or shadows, but I can't remember what.

Whatever it is, it must not be that striking, as I can't find anything prominent about it through a Google search.

Ah, sorry. I thought you meant in adding graphic effects in general, not just DD.
