Milee: I uninstalled the game because I was afraid trying to start developers mode after already starting developers cut would glitch it.
Raze_Larian: There should not be any problem switching back and forth between the 'Developer Mode' and the standard version of the game.
With the GOG install, the Autorun.exe launcher is also in the main 'Divinity II - Developers Cut' install folder, and in the 'bin' subfolder, Divinity2.exe is the normal mode, while Divinity2-debug.exe has the optional 'Developer Mode' cheat menu.
Try right clicking the respective executable and run as administrator. Try right clicking the game executables, select Properties, switch to the Compatibility tab and in Win 10 check 'Override high DPI scaling behavior' (set it to Application), or in Win 7, check off the option to 'Disable display scaling on high DPI settings'. Also check the option to run as administrator, and try different compatibility modes.
Are there any additional details in the error message?
Are you shutting down all non-essential programs (especially anti-virus) before starting the game? Firewalls have also caused conflicts.
Try verifying local files: in Galaxy, select the game in the left column, then click on the More button, and in the Manage menu select 'Verify / Repair'.
Try lowering the game resolution in the standard version, quit and see if that will let you start the Developer Mode version.
I'm not sure how likely these are to help if only one version of the game is crashing, but:
Renaming the intro.wmv and loading.wmv videos in the '..\Divinity II - Developers Cut\Data\Video' folder can avoid startup crashes, and may slightly speed up troubleshooting.
Try the
4GB Patch to increase the amount of virtual memory that the game (or any 32 bit application) can access in 64 bit versions of Windows.
You can try switching to windowed mode (unsupported) by editing the file below in a text editor, and changing the one to a zero in Fullscreen="1".
C:\Users\<UserName>\AppData\Local\Divinity 2\Profile\graphicoptions.xml
Copy the following line into the location field in Windows Explorer for a quick way to get to that folder.
%LocalAppData%\Divinity 2\Profile
To browse there, you may need to set Windows Explorer to show hidden files and folders:

(covers Vista through Win 10)
Try doing a clean boot and then test the game. Click Start, or hit WinKey-R, type in msconfig and hit enter; in the General tab, click Selective Startup, uncheck Load startup items (if required) and leave Load system services and Use original boot configuration options checked. Next, click on the Services tab, check the box to Hide all Microsoft services, then click the Disable All button (maybe make a note of which are currently enabled/disabled), then click OK and reboot the computer.
Run msconfig again to switch back to the normal boot configuration.
Try creating a new Windows administrator user account, switch to that account and try starting the game from there, directly from the executable.
I thank you for all the info. What I did was completely uninstall the game again and then under the 'more' tab I clicked on the Developers Mode and started a clean game without touching anything else. It worked! I don't know what I was doing before or what caused the problem unless it was in the 'cloud saves' that had me starting a saved game in the Developers Cut and I couldn't get out of it. Whatever the reason it's working now. I can use all the info you gave me if I have further problems with this game or another one. Thank you!
