I was having the same problem many people had (stuttering gameplay and unnatural slowness, mostly) in Win7 x64 even after: installing in outside directory as administrator, running program as administrator, changing affinity to single core, etc. but using the old config tool (by downloading, copying it to the game directory and renaming it to replace the old one) is now giving me the opposite problem!

I couldn't even choose Glide, maybe because I have an Nvidia card? Anyway, I chose Direct3d and ran the test: 67 fps. DirectDraw: 137! Now the game seems to run too fast, but I'm not sure if it's REALLY too fast or just seems that way. Has anyone else experienced this issue? Is it actually too fast to play? I got in a battle and everything worked ok but it still seemed like things were moving unnaturally quickly.

Are you describing Divine Divinity or Beyond Divinity? This sounds like the problems that Beyond Divinity was having on Win 7 64 systems. There is no "perfect" solution as the solution seems to be different depending on the hardware of each system.

Glide is the setting the Linux / Wine users have tried with some success on those systems and some folks with 3dfx cards. For pure windows DirectDraw seemed to help on some systems with Direct3D being the default .

Have you tried using different compatibility modes starting with the newest and working backwards to the oldest? If you are playing BD, I suggest going straight to Win 98 compatibility mode since there is an issue with the inventory display in BD that can only be avoided by using that compatibility mode. If you use any other mode and the inventory corruption occurs there is no solution and a new game must be started using Win 98 compatibility mode.

If you are talking about BD some Win 7 64 users have had success by limiting the memory when running the game. I don't care much for this solution since it must be done every time you run the game and undone when you are finished but . . . it has worked for some. Make sure you write down the current setting prior to changing it as you will need to set it back when you are done. You will need to run msconfig to set the memory. 2048 seemed to be the magic number if I remember correctly.

See attached image. I won't be able to respond till tomorrow so hope this helps . . . =)

Edit: I believe you said you right clicked the setup.exe and installed as an admin . . . after installing the game did you right click the game shortcut, click Properties, click the Compatibility tab and check mark "Run this program as an administrator"? Also, checking "Disable visual themes" and "Disable desktop composition" has helped when running Aero.

Actually I'm playing Divine Divinity, not Beyond.

Are you describing things that will make it run slower or faster, as at this point I wouldn't want it running any faster. I didn't try limiting the memory, but I am running it in XP compatability mode. I'll try changing to win98, I guess, and see what happens.

I did run the program as an administrator (by rightclicking the exe) but I didn't disable themes or desktop composition... again, I dunno if that will make it run faster or not. Also, I have no idea what Aero is.

Thanks though!

Sorry, it's a busy week for me this week. Usually, using the old config tool and setting the render to DirectDraw will fix a problem with DD running slow. Since it is not working for you I would set it back to Direct3D and see if it slows down again.

Because setting it to DirectDraw presented a new problem getting it back to the normal configuration would be my first step. Once you have it back to the standard install I would take a look at the resolution you are running the game at. What do you have it set to currently? Set it a a nominal size i.e 800 x 600 or 1280 x 1024 and test the game play. If it does the same in all resolutions you will need to look at other possible fixes.

I would set it back to DirectDraw, turn compaibility modes off, try the game, try the next mode, try the game etc etc. after trying different resolutions.

If your windows are transparent, you are probably using the Aero display, Since it can interfere with older games, check marking "Disable visual themes" and "Disable desktop composition" will sometimes help a game run normally without the interference.

Also, I would not limit the memory for DD as it usually runs ok on Win 7 without it (sounded like you were running BD). After trying the above I would try setting affinity to a single core. Your problem is sorta unique and will take some time to trouble shoot. You might also open a help ticket with GOG support concerning this problem as well.
Honestly, I played the game for about 2 hrs last night and, thought it might be running a TAD bit to fast, this is far preferable to the way it was working before. Also, to tell you the truth, the idea of changing resolutions and compatability modes over and over is just too much for me. As long as I don't have issues with combat I'm just gonna say this is the best it's going to get.

Thanks for your help!

Hope it smooths out for you, sorry I couldn't come up with a true fix. Try turning the "Constant Run" on / off and see if there is a difference. The R key activates / deactivates "run". . . . =)

Edit: Make sure you have the latest video drivers installed as DD can have issues with older drivers.
