Hello GOG community! Just bought Divine Divinity a little bit ago and I am already having a problem with it. I installed the game and when I go to play, it's like the game lags something aweful. When I start out in the bedroom and attempt to take the potion and the gold out of the chest, my character takes forever to get anywhere. Here is my system specs for my laptop:
WINDOWS VISTA 32-BIT W/ SERVICE PACK 2
NVIDIA GeForce Go 6100
AMD Turion 64 Mobile Technology MK-36 2 GHz Single Core
1GB RAM
(Got this one a while back as you can tell) I installed the game into a new file so the the UAC wouldn't mess with it and I would stop getting that annoying error, and I also ran it under compatability mode, for various systems, from XP on down. I also changed the resolution on the game to see if it would help. It did, but not by a whole lot. I also went into the NVIDIA control panel and changed to focus on performance than quality graphics. But I still can't get it to run properly. Can anyone tell me what might be wrong? Or is my computer just too out of date to run it properly?

Make sure you right click the game shortcut, click Properties, click the Compatibility tab and check mark "Run this program as an administrator". I would also check mark "Disable visual themes" and "Disable desktop composition". That usually helps on most systems. If not post back and an we can try a few other possible fixes. . . =)

Are you sure its actual lag and not the character just moving slow? They walk really slow unless you run by moving the cursor the the outer edge of the screen and holding the walk button down. Also if you click on an item you want to pick up they move very slowly over to them. Your best off running over to it and then clicking to pick it up.

You can toggle auto-run so you don't have to go through that constantly. I think it's R by default, but you can configure game keys anyway.
Wow, did not expect to see suggestions so quickly. I will have to try those here in a little while. I'll make sure to get back once I have tried those out. But, for the game itself, I know that the characters walk slow and they run faster when the cursor is farther away from them, but when the mouse lags just trying to hover over objects in game and it takes about a minute to walk a short distance, and the running animation is like something off of Baywatch, something just dosen't seem right.

Hey Stuff, did what you said, but the game is still lagging. The mouse does not keep pace with my movements and I need to click multiple times for the game to recognize that I want to do something, even in the main menu... Also I am still having the characters Baywatch run (Very slow). Should I use some sort of compatablility mode, or should I just change the resolution? All I want to do is go questing. is that too much to ask for?

I tend to think that the 1 GB of RAM may be the limiting factor but . . .

When you start the game, on the opening screen, in the lower right corner it should say V1.005A. If not you will need to uninstall the game, delete any folders left behind and re-download the DD setup.exe and reinstall. Larian fixed many problems with the game about six months after it was released on GOG. If your version is the old version, downloading the new setup.exe will most likely fix your current problem and many others as well.

I assume you have the latest video drivers for your system as DD likes the newest drivers.

After checking "Run this program as an Administrator" did you try playing without a compatibility mode?

I would also disconnect from the internet and temporarily disable my Anti-virus and Firewall. Try the game, if the problem is gone - usually making the div.exe, located in the DD install directory, a trusted program in the firewall / AV will fix many problems.

DD likes nominal resolutions so if you used a res outside of the normal sizes setting the game res to a nominal size that is close to your res may help. Look here under the bolded "Resolution" header for more about that.

As a last resort I would download the old config tool and set the rendering to directdraw. The tool is not supported by GOG or Larian Studios so use it at your own risk. I has fixed many graphical problems for some folks. See this thread for more info on the old config tool. . . =)

Yep, checked the game version and it is up to date. Checking to see if the drivers are up to date now. Last I checked they were alright. Had to do that to play Neverwinter Nights and actually see the screen. Oh, and too, about the Administrator thing, I did not run the game under any compatability mode yet. Maybe I should do that, huh?
Well the drivers are fine, and tried to run the game under different compatability modes. Going to try to get the old DD config tool to see if that helps. I don't know what else to do, unless I am missing something.
Okay, getting a bit frustrated now, proably due to the fact that it is now in the small hours of the morning. I tried the different resolutions and it did not work, I did different compatability modes and it won't work. Now, I have downloaded the old congif tool, but it keeps saying "Initialization failed". How do I use the old config properly?

ronoco89: How do I use the old config properly?
Shut DD down if it is running.

Go to the DD install directory, find the configtool.exe and rename it, I usually name it configtool.e_e but any name will do. Copy the old configtool.exe that you downloaded to the DD install directory. Right click the file and click "Run as an administrator" in the resulting dialog.

Set the rendering to DirectDraw, click "Apply and close" and close the program. Open DD and play the game.

If it fixed the problem, play the game.

if the problem is not fixed, I suggest you go back to the DD install directory, right click the configtool exe that you downloaded (the old one) set the rendering back to Direct3D, click "Apply and close". Delete the tool and rename the configtoot.exe that came with the game. There is no need to leave the rendering in the unsupported DirectDraw if it doesn't help since Direct3D is the default rendering for the game.
It runs awfully slow for me as well for it's requirements.
Trying to run it at or close to native screen resolution will require serious hardware despite the game's age.

Check the in game enhancements and disable fog, you can also lower the overall quality of effects. Fog used to kill my older pc.

I found the exe compatibility modes to be worse, rather than better. They often resulted in immediate day/night switches rather than transitioning nicely through afternoon to night.

The thing that improved speed for me, was to go into my sound devices (right click on the speaker icon in the task bar), and check the properties of my speakers and headphones. Ticking the box that says 'disable all effects' or similar... it turns off all enhancements.

Then I ran a directsound filter reset I got from newvegasnexus which resets all direct sound codecs back to windows install defaults.

This fixed up my graphics speed issues. I still on occasion get sound static, unfortunately. I wonder if the game is trying to use more sound channels than my on board sound can handle.

If you are running a dual / quad core CPU and have not tried this already, you might want to take a look at this. This solution fixes the static problem on some systems. =)

I had no luck with run first on windows7 it would run and quit with an error ad infinitum. I looked online and found that since vista, cmd.exe now allows you to add a /affinity to the command line so it's now possible to run any program on whichever core you want from a simple (kind of) short cut. No need for separate programs anymore.
