I am constantly stuck with rainbow colors or a black screen in dark areas of the game. Anyone know how to fix this?

EDIT: Had to completely remove and reinstall video card drivers. Seems to have fixed it.

EDIT: Worked one time, now broke again. Wee.

EDIT: The game isn't transitioning areas properly.

I'm not sure if this still works in the download version, but try editing the config.lcl file in the Divine Divinity folder (using Notepad, or other text editor), add the line splotchproblem 1 to the end, hit enter (the game expects the last line to be blank, and ignores it) and save. (FIX for splotch problem/weird color areas/fog)

It is a slightly different issue, but check out the suggestions in the Steam forum topic Game screen greened out.

What you yo mean by not 'transitioning areas properly'? There is a known issue some/many people have run into where music doesn't change when changing regions, or doesn't play in certain areas, etc.

Transitioning areas properly. As in I'll go through a gate to another zone, and it will stay on the previous map visually even while the sound changes

For example: If I go into a cellar, the game will remain above in the overworld sans player character even as the cellar sounds start playing.

That particular problem is usually caused by having "free camera view" on. Caps Lock toggles between free camera and follow camera.

No clue about other graphics problems.
Disable Caps Lock and the screen will remain focused on your character. You can enable it again (or hold the Shift key down) in order to move the screen (to see or toss stuff farther).
It looks from http://www.larian.com/Site/english/divinity/supportfaq.html as though when Larian implemented splotchproblem 1 they thought this problem would 'only occur on Windows ME system with a NVidia Geforce based card'.

Given http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2789542&page=2 it seems they now know the problem can appear on other set-ups, but there's no reliable fix at present. I haven't found any suggestions that have worked on my machine.
The topic Game screen greened out may have some suggestions you haven't tried. It isn't quite the same issue, but some of the suggestions may still be applicable.
Use Glide or Software rendering instead of Direct3D.
@Raze_Larian Yes, I saw you posted that above.

@Tarnum Yes, I've tried fiddling about with the config tool, to no avail.

Cheers for the replies, though.

Oops, sorry. I skimmed through the earlier posts in the topic, but missed that I had already provided that link.

Did you try emailing support@larian.com? Larian_QA probably would have updated the Steam forum topic again if there were any new confirmed fixes, but it can't hurt to check.

Not yet; I wasn't sure whether I should contact them first or GOG support, and either way it seemed reasonable to post on the forum first of all.
Fixed it: it turns out that what I had was the latest OEM version of the driver, which clearly hasn't caught up with the latest standard version.
