I've been playing Divine Divinity for a few hours and already this happened twice: game crashes to desktop with the standard 'report error' message, just as the saving progress bar fills up. The save is not present after running the game again. Most frustrating to say the least! It happened both during quick and standard save.

I'm using Win XP, I set the game to use only one CPU to avoid the bursts of static noise. Any idea to prevent this error? It costs me a lot of time and frustration.

I would first disconnect from the internet and turn your firewall and anti-virus programs off. Try playing and saving the game. If you get a good save, turn on the firewall and try again then the AV program. It is not unusual for one or the other to block writing to disk for a game. This should tell you if either is blocking disk writes and which one.

I use Comodo for a firewall. It was throwing up "Allow" dialogs behind the game screen which closed with the game. I only found them by ALT -TABbing out of the game. I made the div.exe a trusted program in Comodo and had no further problems. . . . =)

Edit: Be sure to enable your firewall and AV before reconnecting to the internet.
