I have never tried to make fun of him but if you accept the quest to find axe called Slasher you will get exp. points. Try putting said axe in town and go back to Simurk & give option comes up, choose it & get your exp. points & you get to keep the axe when you can use it later.

If running Vista, right click on the DD shortcut, click Properties, click Compatibility, check mark "Run this program as an administrator"
Make sure you have the latest video driver installed, can make a big difference.
When you load the game, does it load to a place before you kill Simurk? If so, try accepting the quest. Making fun of him may cause a cut scene to run. Cut scenes are known problems until the patch is released. Most accept Simurks quest, myself included, since it's on your way, it gives you experience, you can keep the axe, etc etc.
If the game loads after you kill Simurk, continue to another area and try to save again. Use the "S" key to access the save option, quick save often gives "write to HD" errors, pressing the "S" key seems to give me fewer write to HD errors.
Edit: Larian is working on a patch for DD, since you are just starting, it might be worth waiting a few weeks for the patch. The game can be frustrating to play with the bugs.
Look for posts by DeathKnight and Sektor to keep up with the patch progress. There is the possibility that a patch may render your current save files useless, I don't know that for sure, just something to consider before getting too far into the game with a patch on the horizon.
