Having encountered both of these issues, one of which can only be avoided by starting a new game, I thought I'd post this as a headsup for people.
1) Game running very slowly.
If you have 4GB+ of RAM and a x64 OS, then this is the likely culprit.
Go to run -> type in msconfig -> boot -> advanced options -> set max memory to 3072 and restart (You'll need to uncheck this to get back full memory usage).
2) Inventory items appearing in the wrong slots.
If this has occured, sadly it's already too late and starting a new game will be necessary. The only way to avoid this is by setting compatibility to 98/me.
Right click on shortcut -> properties -> compatibility -> set to 98/me
Hopefully this helps someone before it's too late, I just encountered the inventory bug about 15 hours in. (RAGE!!!!!)

Thanks for this. I haven't got round to playing BD yet, so this will definitely come in handy.
Now, I have only myself to blame for this, having noticed this thread, and even replied to say thanks. I then played BD for a few hours before noticing the equipment bug.
But on a more general level, I don't think anyone would think to set a compatibility level of a shortcut to Win 98 before playing a game. It's too much to expect. Are GOG not able to set these things in the installer. From what I can tell it would be a little bit of work (custom actions and embedded code in the installer), but that could then be used for any installer, and it's not like a site for old games won't encounter this a lot.
