All along this was marketed as a stand alone version of the game.
Much like DOS Enhanced Edition, and DOS "Classic, for which I have separate games in my account.

It was even announced that original owners of DOS2 would get this game "Free", and Larian was widely praised for doing that.

I have not got it for "Free", if they have removed my paid for game DOS2, and replaced it with this.
I have simply got an update to the game I own,

Plus I see there is day one DLC, and I know existing owners get that "Free" as well, but that doesn't change the fact that new customers (Console owners for example) are seeing day 1 DLC.

If this was EA, I'd not be surprised by the shady marketing, for Larian to use them, is very sad.

Day 1 DLC is always a despicable practice, and by giving that DLC to PC owners,
Larian shows they know it's shady, and hope to lessen the protests.

DOS2DE is not "Free" to existing owners if you remove access to the original game, it's just another update.

I'm very disappointed in the underhand marketing tactics being used here, but EA, and Activision wouldn't be.

(EDIT)
Now it's downloaded installed, I see that the Classic game is included in this build, which means it's actually just an update, it's replacing the original if you don't choose to install it elsewhere.

But as my complaint is about the marketing of it as a stand alone game, and the day 1 DLC of that game, it changes nothing really.

They always stated that the PC version would be sent as an update, and not as a stand-alone game. They also stated that you wouldn't lose access to the original release. In this case, its an option within the launcher (as your update states you found). You are quite mistaken, however, as if you choose "Classic" on the launcher, it isn't a separate installation. You end up with BOTH versions installed. The consoles are only getting the Definitive edition, since DOS2 wasn't released on consoles previously. Its not "underhanded marketing", as you so eloquently stated. Larian was CLEAR about their release plans, you are merely choosing to ignore them.
I don't understand. You have the old version and you also get an updated edition which apparently fixes and improves a lot of stuff.

What is the issue? You wanted to pay for this new version?
To OP:

You didn't lose anything. Just select "Classic" and your original install, saves and all, loads right up. Next time, before making assumptions, *try the software out* to see if you missed something--which you missed here...;)
