As much as I love Larain and their games, this new launcher is something nobody asked for and it introduces a third-party DRM to a game that was sold to us as DRM free, this applies to all three of their most popular games and it is making me reconsider buying BG3.

I won't be using and it and I won't be buying a new Larian game until they reconsider their pointless launcher and reconcile with their customers.

I also think that should they not, everyone should be entitled to a refund, no questions asked.

EDIT:
The newest version of the launcher seems to allow skipping the login step now.
The launcher itself can be skipped as a whole, as @DRALRD said below, with the following CLA:
--skip-launcher

Glad to see Larian keep the spirit of DRM free going in their games.

If there was ever a time for a studio to copy what Blizzard does, 2021 is it.
There's no patch on the offline installers section yet, so I haven't tried the new version (3.6.117.3735) yet.

Does it really add DRM? If so GOG should demand that part is removed, as that's very much not what we as customers signed up for when buying from GOG. Thank goodness for the offline installers, and the ability to retain a "last good version" if necessary. But yes, obviously the solution to the problem is not to ship broken things.

In the changelog they link to this forum post on Larian: https://forums.larian.com/ubbthreads.php?ubb=showflat&Number=789413#Post789413 which details how to disable the launcher from popping up.

No, it doesn't add DRM, the launcher is not needed to start the game. You can start the game directly with the EoCApp.exe if you want. And, like you noticed you can even skip the launcher with an command line Argument --skip-launcher. If the launcher would do any DRM checks this would not be possible.

Great, good to hear, I thought as much, thanks for checking. People associate launchers with DRM these days, but they're not the same thing (though obviously launchers can be a way to enable DRM).

Not only this, but the latest version allows you to skip the login within the launcher as well.
The launcher isn't technically DRM, but it is obnoxious. I hope GoG warns us in the future of games that do this. so I can avoid buying them.
The launcher is obnoxious, but not a deal-breaker. If you don't care about meaningless achievement points (single-player rpg, why would you care?) you can just launch directly.

--skip-launcher I couldn't figure out, but as DRALRD said, the EoCApp.exe file bypasses this quite well.

Not an ideal scenario, but I don't think this violates GoG's "No-DRM" policy. As long as an .exe can launch directly.
Imagine my surprise when I went to play my DOS2. It wouldn't run unless I logged into another service? Just no.

I couldn't get the skip launcher to work but thankfully the EoCApp.exe did, thank you all for that. I am not buying bg3 if this nonsense continues.. I don't want even 1 more platform/launcher needed to install and run games I bought. I always assumed gog games would only need gog.

Cheers,
FD
Trying to launch directly from EoCApp.exe crashes shortly after the opening Larian Screen.

--skip-launcher works for me although this is really annoying. I think Larian dropped the ball on this one. An option at install would have been the way to handle it:

Would you like to use the Larian Launcher Y/N ?
This setting can be changed anytime after install by going to Game Settings...

I have been playing their games since Divine Divinity and have not been this disappointed with anything up to this point.

I'm in cmplete agreement but also a creature of habit like all of us so, still going with it!
Preferred the old launcher given that it was just a plain and simple updater to manage to the game like how launchers used to be like in the old days. These days it is like launchers have to be these bloated things with everything and the kitchen sink, shoving stuff in your face that you have no interest with.
Since the launch DOS2 suffered from stupid decisions from the developers, the first was the handling of updates (this was partially GOGs fault as well). The second bad decision was the release of definitive edition, which would be perfectly fine if they didn't merge the old version with it, doubling the size. WHO DOES THAT?! So now the game is 60-65gb instead of half that!

But this, this useless crapware launcher was the last straw! I won't be buying any more Larian games, until they sort out this whole mess!

For those interested (not 00063) you can just delete the version of DOS2 that you don't use. I play the definitive edition, so after installation I deleted the folder with the classic data. My install folder is just 26.3 GB.

Of course you could delete the version you don't use, however that doesn't solve the issue of downloading the huge 49gb installation folder (installations should be separated)! Neither does it removes the presence of their launcher, the whole "--skip-launcher" thing isn't a permanent solution!
