Have spent 2 hours of my saturday trying to make this work now and I've run out of ideas... asking for some clever tech savvy people out there to please help me set up a way I can play with my friend...

I tried Hamachi, but there was this yellow triangle issue that despite my efforts I couldn't solve. I already briefly tried Tunngle, until it tried to rape my computer with persistant porn spam....

I have read that should go with the "direct connect". May you need to know the IP-Adress for this (Google MyIP), but I play solo, so I have not try it.

Direct Connect keeps failing. I heard some people mention how it was offline after a hotfix yesterday.

You can use direct connect with a IP address. It's works just fine.

From devs on steam community group:
"The multiplayer lobby issues should be solved now. We had to take down a server so GM mode will be slower and direct connect won’t work. This was a consequence of the bigger than expected server load because of the amount of people playing together. This took us by surprise but we will increase our server capacity. We apologize for the inconvenience."

It is working if you use IP instead of a server ID. Port forwarding may be required though.

Direct connect using the auto-generated code hasn't worked last night. But direct connect with a IP address, instead of code, had worked just fine. I had played with my friend couple hours last night, just before devs rolled a 999 patch, using this method.

For me the "Direct Connect" button keeps deactivating. Can I still give the IP address to my friends to connect to my game or do I really need to forward ports? If so, which one are necessary?

Yeah I'm having the same issue. I there're server issues atm - probably the only way to get around it for the moment would be virtual lan stuff like Hamachi. I'd imagine it'll be solved soon though

Yes, you can give your IP address to your friends. If you have a UPnP feature enabled on your router(which is usually on by default), you don't need to worry about port forwarding.

Thanks for the answer. We managed via Hamachi since neither of us could connect via the IP address.
The Upnp feature is activated at least for me
