So I have bought the game on GOG and my friend on steam and no matter how we try to do it, we just can't seem to connect to each other. We always get a Connection Error message. The weird part is, I've already played the game with other steam users and both of us have no problem joining random games. To test the problem further I asked a second friend to join games hosted by either me or my buddy, and he could join both of them effortlessly. So it seems to be a problem just between our pcs.
We've tried connecting via Discord Invite, Server-ID and IP-address, but none work.
We're both using Definitive edition, both tried a winsock reset, checked our firewalls, almost anything you could think of while checking other forums. So now I'm all out of options.
If anyone has other tips/ideas I'd be really grateful.

One extra: when I first tried multiplayer with other friends we had a similar problem, but that one fixed itself after a couple of tries and it's been going smoothly ever since

Did you each try joining a game hosted by the second friend?

The only connection option you didn't mention trying is LAN, though testing that would require VPN software, such as Hamachi or Tunngle.

Are you and the first friend both in the same neighbourhood/city, or using the same ISP, or anything that could account for a difference in the network between you that isn't a factor with the other people you've been able to play with?

If one or both of you try creating a new Windows administrator user account, switch to that account and try starting the game from there, directly from the executable, does that make a difference?
Maybe do a clean boot first, and then test the game. Click Start, or hit WinKey-R, type in msconfig and hit enter; in the General tab, click Selective Startup, uncheck Load startup items (if required) and leave Load system services and Use original boot configuration options checked. Next, click on the Services tab, check the box to Hide all Microsoft services, then click the Disable All button (maybe make a note of which are currently enabled/disabled), then click OK and reboot the computer.
Run msconfig again to switch back to the normal boot configuration.
So we tried a couple of those new options.

1. When trying to connect to the second friends game, only I was able to connect

2. We tried playing via Hamachi: We can find each other and join the game, but the connection is not stable enough, so when we start the game we had 2 problems. When he hosts the intro sequence doesn't even start and we're staring at a black screen. When I host, the game continues, but he gets kicked out

3. We tried the administrator thing: nothing

4. tried clean boot, both of us: nothing

For network clarification: My friend and I live in different towns, technically even different countries, but it's germany and austria and the towns maybe 100 km away from each other. I live in a college dorm with a already set up internet connection that's being shared by the whole dorm. My second friend is also in that dorm.
I tried starting a game with a third different friend that doesn't live in the dorm and also lives in another town. Couldn't connect to him or he with me either, but I wasn't able to check if the same applies to the first friend.

I hope that narrows it down some bit. Thanks for the help so far
Did you ever figure out what was happening here? I'm having the same problem currently. Me and a friend who are both stationed at Ramstein Germany have been playing together (me on GOG her on Steam) and now neither of us can connect to each others games at all. Direct connect doesn't work, invites don't work, even VPN's don't work. I'm on a temporary trip to Mississipi, so I'm not sure if it's just a location change or what.
