Backup download of the game isn't working, says "failed, server problem"
(GoG Galaxy 1.2.23)

Game extra downloads work fine.

It appears to just be Divinity: Original Sin 2

Nope, it's a bunch of games. It seems to be a backend Galaxy issue:
Galaxy API has issues when trying to get download link using the "downlink" url from product details json.

I'll use Jotun Valhalla Edition as an example because I tested this with the official GOG Galaxy client but the issue is wide spread and affects multiple games
...
This causes the backup feature of the official GOG Galaxy client to fail due to "server error"
Until GOG fixes it you can download via the website, GOG Downloader or third-party downloader.

Yuck, well here's hoping they fix it soon.

(I did end up downloading it with my web browser.)

You can always browse to your "~/Documents/Larian Studios/Divinity Original Sin 2/" folder and make a copy of your "PlayerProfiles" folder to make a manual backup.

I meant game installation backup.

I do backup my saves.

Sorry i misread. My apologies.
Down loading anything from GOG is a night mare. Divinity Oringinal 2 took over 24 hrs. My fasts speed was 2 MB/s and slowest .6MB/s. Dispite me being on BT Infinity2 who check my set up and said my speeds were 56MB/s and 17MB/s.
