I'd love to play this all the way through to the end, but as there appears to be no way to save your progress, every time you quit you need to start back at square one - and repeating everything gets tedious and time-consuming.

Was this the case when it was originally released? It seems like a pretty big oversight, development-wise...

It's a port of a Sega game. Most console platformers from this era didn't have a save slot. You had to play them in one gaming session. I suspect that is why it doesn't have a save option. The games that had saves were usually RPGs or games made for PC in the first place.
