Disciples Gold, when started on 2 Netbooks (Gateway NX1000X/VISTA and Asus 1000H / XP) comes up with a popup which locks the PC and says this:
Veuillez inserer le CD de jeu original dans votre lecteur CD-ROM
I don't know French, but I think it's demanding that I insert my original CD. The PC is halted until I hit cancel.
On a desktop or laptop with integrated CD-ROM drive it works fine.
My primary PC is a Netbook. Anybody else have this problem? I've sent the problem to GOG twice without response. I wish I'd not made this purchase....

It may be a bug in the original CD protection... while the protection itself is removed in the GOG version (as you have already verified with your other PCs), there could be some checks that still fail since your netbook reports no CD-DRIVE available.
You can try one simple workaround: install Daemon tools and enable one virtual drive (no need to mount any disk image, just have the unit added in the system) then try running the game again
Thanks for the suggestion. I installed Daemon tools, but now it looks like I need a .iso file to mount in order to fully emulate a CD-ROM drive. I guess I now need to find something that creates a dummy.iso file. What a pain!

It shouldn't be necessary... i just tried here on my laptop
started DT>right-click on tray icon>"Virtual CD">"Set number of devices...">"1 drive"
and got one new "J:" virtual drive in the system
Although DT seems to run fine, when I change the number of virtual devices I get a popup stating "Updating virtual devices", which remains for a looong time, then disappears.
However, after this Explorer only shows two hard drives - C: and D:, (Local and Recovery) partitions of my primary.
Is there a DT error log file somewhere?
I'm using Vista. Apparently DT has a problem with Vista:
http://forum.daemon-tools.cc/f19/unable-set-new-drive-letter-under-vista-6960/index4.html
However I'm loath to munge my registry in order to implement the recommended fix:
http://www.pchell.com/hardware/cd_drive_error_code_39.shtml
Not sure what to do now....
My primary computer is a netbook, too (LG X110 with Win XP) (and thus I'm happy that GOG exists, 'cause all the games don't need an optical drive).
I don't know if you're talking about Disciples: Sacred Lands Gold or Disciples 2 Gold. I bought the letter, and it runs fine. However, I had installed Demon Tools anyway, so I might not have recognized a potential problem.

Update from Dewberry (original poster)
I was never able to get Disciples 1 running on my Gateway NX1000X Netbook. Apparently Diciples 1 contains some residual requirement to see a CDROM player upon startup. I tried installing Daemon Tools, but DT has an issue with some Vista installations in which it won't produce a virtual drive letter (eg F:). Maybe this is another netbook issue,a s my occasional CDROM drive is mounted through USB.
Therefore even with DaemonTools I can't run Disciples 1 on my travel pc (a netbook).
However, because I love turn-based strategy games so much, I gritted my teeth and put another quarter in the snack machine. I bought and downloaded Disciples 2 yesterday. And it runs FANTASTIC.
Thanks GOG! More old-school turn-based strategy!
Now back to my Elven Conquest...
I have been running Disciples 2 Gold on my asus 904hd with no problems. Haven't tried the first one however...
I had the same problem with my Netbook when I downloaded Disciples 1 for the first time. I simply downloaded it again, and now it works smooth.
Put the CD in cancel the auto install which is your problem. Now go to My Computer find the drive it is in and open it by right clicking on the drive and selecting open in the menu. Once you have it open find the Setup.exe and run it manually that should make it install I had the same problem and did this to get around it. Remember any game that has problems installing you can try this on and most of the time it works.
Hey dewberry,
Have you thought about trying some other virtual drive software? IE. UltraISO.

I had the same problem. I manage to resolve it.
Environment:
Asus EEE 1005PE with Windows7 Starter
Steps:
1. I have installed Magic ISO Virtual CD rom
This didn't solve the problem
2. I have ran config.exe from the folder that disciple.exe exists
I made sure that proper cd-rom letter has been choosen. and I have pressed the 'Save' button.
Combination of those two steps made possible to run Disciples 1 on Asus EEE 1005PE.
I have also restarted Windows between step 1 and 2 but I don't think it is necessary.
Just search the gamecopyworld for no cd patch, it worked on my Netbook ASUS 1005HA
When it comes to CD/DVD Drive emulation, Daemon Tools are okay, just be sure to set emulated drive letter FIRST after hard disk drives (for example you got C:, D:, E: and F:, you should set emulated CD/DVD drive to letter G: -> otherwise, it could not work).

You could do it in Drive Settings from Daemon Tools menu.

EASY SOLUTION (at least for me):
I don't have a net book but, I was getting the exact same french CD error Message of the OP....so finally I went to the config program in the games Exe file folder, and turned off PLAY INTRODUCTION...and guess what? No error message, and it now is working fine! Hope that is the easy fix for everyone =)
