StormyFacade: Less special zones often means less loot. You get more stuff in Singleplayer, simply because you end up getting Chamber of Bone, King Leoric's Tomb, Hidden Passage (which contains the poisoned well quest), Arkaine's Valor, Warlord of Blood, Anvil of Fury, etc. The extra enemies really does make it a bit easier to keep going one more level on your first playthrough.
But in multiplayer, you can access the higher difficulty levels which drop much better loot. At least in theory, the current battle.net implementation is broken but you can still do local multiplayer.

Singleplayer isn't meant to support the higher difficulties (the "difficulty" menu is never shown when starting a game) but there's a bug that remembers the previously used difficulty setting. So you can start a multiplayer "hell" or "nightmare" game, then back out and go into single player.

Yeah, Diablo 1 is a little fucky.

Unless you think that it's just part of the internal canon mind of Aidan in his fight against Diablo's soul, and his inevitable failure.

How do you play local multiplayer? Do you mean LAN? I'm trying to figure out a way to play 2 players on one screen like we used to do back on PS1. Is that even possible on PC?

Local multiplayer = LAN, non-local multiplayer = internet (which means using battle.net for Diablo).
The PC version never supported multiple players on one machine.

Yes, LAN. PC Diablo has never supported splitscreen operation.

ciwlx: Personally, I think of Diablo 1's single player mode as rogue-like-like, or a story. In a story, a hero may fail because he/she lacks experiences, equipments, or spells. Or maybe he/she do this quests, and do not do those quests. If you want more RPG-like experience, multiplayer is the way to go.
This is exactly what Diablo is. The whole action crpg genre came out as a modification of the roguelike genre. Blizzard took NetHack, made it real time, added a mouse driven interface and graphics, changed the setting etc and there you have it ;-).
