I want to play with a friend in another state. Can I do that without using Battle.net?

Also, I know there are two "versions" the classic and the one with some bugfixes and scaling. Will both versions allow multiplayer without using Battle.net?

Yes you can play via Hamachi for example.
It's a VPN app, basically it makes your computers think they are plugged in next to each other and enables LAN gaming.

Yes, you can use either of the versions. The one with "bugfixes and scaling" actually doesn't fix any bugs and with some files copied you can change the classic version into the scaled version easily.

Thank you! But I'm slightly confused about what you said regarding the bugfixes. The GOG says a "host of bugfixes", Windows 10 ready out of the box and scaling via aspect ratio. That is not true? Especially regarding the bugfixes?
Yeah kinda. They didn't fix the game in any way, they just added wrappers around the game that make it run in Windows 10 and upscale it. It works, but also brings its own set of issues. You can read through the forum here to see which ones :)
