Even with port forwarding being a problem for some people, creating and joining games is really hit or miss. Some guy was able to create games, but I couldn't join him. When I create a game, he can join me, but when I leave and try to reconnect to it, I get a latency error. This does seem to have an affect on him, because now he was able to join other games after joining mine, so it appeared to have partly fixed his issue, but when he relogs to battle.net it messes up again and he can no longer join others or get people to join his. Also, for the first time, saw someone that was level 30 and tried to join their game, but it says I need to be level 30 (im 33), which must be a problem with battle.net not reporting character levels properly (everyone appears to be level 1 fighter).

Hopefully gog can do something, or maybe it's blizzard that needs to do it, but either way, it seems like this game will never meet its potential again - will anyone "waste" the time to update it?

YES. I get the exact same bloody problem. People keep referring me to Port Forwarding and Blizzard support but I already did this and some people don't understand what the hell I am saying to them. This is a big issue for me cause I bought this only for the Multiplayer and unfortunately it is a lottery game if you will be able to join other games or have people join your created game with that LATENCY TOO HIGH issue... Hope Blizz & GOG get this fixed
did you bought this game just for multiplayer? sorry but you're crazy dude.
This game is a nest of cheaters. Cheaters anywahere. Who dupes, who let you crash, who have pg lvl 1 that cast spells with 500 damage, even in the town center.
And... really? Is really it your problem just a port forwarding and latency?
Are you sure of your bought now?
Sorry but i wanna simply open your eyes about the real world of diablo's multiplayer. Or better say, Cheater's multiplayer.

This game is not more supported from blizzard, since many years and i don't really think that will be supported from gog, that he just put it for playing (single or multi is indifferent).

i'm sorry telling you this, but is the sad reality. It's time you got a reason and have a good time just to live the memories of the diablo's years.

Have not seen a single cheater in this game yet (granted I've only played with 3 people), but you sound like you're reminiscing the old days where that was the case. Not enough people play Diablo 1 as far as I've seen that even warrants that type of griefer attitude. Even if it were true, it's still no excuse not to fix the problems with the game. People paid money for the experience to play Diablo 1 again, GOG made the deal with Blizzard to attract more attention to their platform. Leaving it be and letting it fester in an unfinished mess is not the right attitude.

As for the topic, the spell Flash also needs to be fixed (it just doesn't work properly), as well as the drop of unique rings - which you will only ever find Ring of Engagement due to a bug that makes it always the first unique ring drop, and it's unlikely you'll find more than 1 in a single game. These are very old bugs that I would like to see fixed finally.

Blizzard didn't give GoG access to source code. You're able to play Diablo in all it's glory. You won't see another 'official' patch from Blizzard for the game. If you're in it for the MP then make a group of trust worthy people you're playing MP with so cheaters can't ruin the experiance.
We're lucky to get this game at all here on GoG.

Diablo 1 was and always has been meant to be a single-player experience, imo.

As originally developed, according to the reporting in Germany's Gamestar you're right. MP was tacked on later. However, personally, I spent countless fun hours on the D1 battle net. Haven't yet tried it on the GOG version though.

Irrelevant. I played it all the time on battle.net way back when and it worked fine, except for the two bugs I mentioned (and others that did not impact gameplay). The bottom line is that it's not working the way it should, it's missing features that are supposed to be there - a big one being showing character class and level in chat, being a level 1 fighter restricts playing games with others that are made in nightmare or hell diff because you need to be level 20/30, so you can never join those games, and only allowing you to play with others in normal diff. Whether or not this is something GOG can fix or if it's Blizzard's responsibility is yet to be seen.

This is one of many known bugs that the community identified and fixed long ago. See the DSF list of Diablo 1 bugs for this and many more.

According to Jarulf's Guide, this is not quite right. There are impossible unique rings, but there are possible unique rings other than Ring of Engagement. You can get the Constricting Ring in any difficulty. Due to quirks of mlvl/ilvl/qlvl interaction, you can get The Bleeder and Ring of Regha in higher difficulty games.

As far as I know, the only way you can get any of the other rings is to have two unique rings drops in a single game. The first one will always be Ring of Engagement, after that you can get any of the other rings. The problem is playing a game where more than 1 unique ring drops, and unique items are already rare, so getting two specific rare drops in a single game would be really lucky.

As for other bug fixes, I don't really want to download mods or unofficial patches that fix that stuff. It's not a big deal really if it doesn't get fixed, because I get by just fine with Fireball and Chain Lightning, but anything that changes the game and makes me unable to play online is not something I'm going to do. The issue is mostly that Flash is magic damage, and when you run across immune to fire/lightning in hell diff, it would be nice to have the option that doesn't suck. Right now I'm just upgrading Blood Star and Guardian.

Too bad I can't get to meet cheaters cause I can't even connect to the game because of the LATENCY TOO HIGH issue. Anyway that's not a big deal for me since I will create a game with a password and play with people who want to play legit without duping or other stuff. It is just not fun to do that.

P.S

I really like how you ignored the entire issue of not being able to connect to the game to even play it. This is some old-school trolling. Might be worthwhile taking some reading classes just in case you didn't understand what the issue was

Yes, doing that in single player is how to get the otherwise "impossible" unique items. The game refuses to drop two of the same unique, so it is forced to skip to the second (or later) item, allowing an otherwise impossible drop. The impossible drops are completely impossible in multiplayer because the game does not enforce the uniqueness rule on uniques. The rings I mentioned are not impossible, because they do not have qlvl collisions. The Bleeder and Ring of Regha become possible in higher difficulties because the ilvl is based on the modified mlvl, but the qlvl remains tied to the base mlvl. This is also why you can get Full Plate Mail in Hell difficulty church (boosted ilvl) but the enchantments are just as useless as in Normal difficulty church (unboosted qlvl). Similarly, you can't get certain very high level enchantments (such as Hydra's or Whale) from monsters: no monster has a base mlvl high enough to drop those qlvls, and since qlvl depends on base mlvl instead of difficulty-adjusted mlvl, fighting in Hell/Hell doesn't get you better enchantments than Normal/Hell.

Agreed. Guardian isn't Magic damage though. It summons a stationary pet that shoots firebolts. Blood Star, Bone Spirit, and Flash are your Magic-dealing spells.

Yep. Diablo (1) was never written with "massively online multiplayer" in mind. It was designed, mainly, as a single-player experience, but with the option to play cooperatively with a group of friends as well. The "competition" capabilities sort of suck, frankly.

If you want to get together with a "party" of friends and run through a dungeon together, that's entirely practical and a lo of fun, though.

Flesh420.613: You're able to play Diablo in all it's glory.
This is objectively incorrect. As I've said, there is content missing. There may not be future patches, but they could at least make available what they did well after launch. The problem here is, as was pointed out, battle.net was released after the game launched, and battle.net is present, so it was patched to a point, but battle.net is not near the state it was in that I remember it, which means it is not completely patched and up to date to what it should be. In short, Blizzard is holding out and gave a buggy, unfinished and seemingly unsupported game to gog for a quick buck and gog ate it up, which makes sense given their current state, but still... very sloppy, and not necessarily the best way to go about garnering incentive to continue use of this service that is currently in trouble. No one would buy an unfinished mess on gog, which is why most of these games come, at the very least, with their up to date official patches.

Have you read the initial advertisement for Diablo when it was released here?

"Travelers looking for the authentic Diablo experience can play the game as it was in 1996, with period-appropriate 20 FPS SVGA graphics, and *the ability to matchmake through the classic version of Blizzard’s Battle.net® online-gaming service. For those wanting something a bit more modern, Blizzard and GOG.COM have collaborated on an updated version of the game tuned for today’s gaming PCs, which includes out-of-the-box Windows 10 compatibility, **a host of bug fixes and high-resolution support via aspect ratio-correct upscaling."
