I try to start hellfire and get this error: Direct Draw Error

First the text told me to Use DirectX 3.0 ,,,
Second in the end of the text stand: The error encountered while trying to initialize the video card was:
Nicht implementiert! (german to english : not included)
at: dx.cpp line 183

So, what I have to do, to play hellfire?

Try installing the DirectX end-user runtime from Microsoft:

This will update some of the legacy DirectX libraries that may not be present or updated on current Windows versions.

If that still doesn't work, it would be helpful to know your operating system version and what graphics card you're using.

Just start Hellfire directly from the EXE file in the Diablo folder.
This worked for me.

GOG Galaxy seems a bit buggy with older games in general.

DevilutionX should solve this issue and now includes support for Hellfire:

I installed these files, but no luck; same error.
I'm running Windows 10 with latest OS and a NVIDIA gtx1660ti card

Update:
D1HF works for me now.
Guess I guess I just needed to restart my computer for the updated DirectX files to work.
On the other hand, D1HF still looks crappy to me compared to "regular" D1.

I tried this, and though it works, it looks terrible compared to trying to play regular Diablo 1

In all seriousness, though: DevilutionX is specifically built for modern operating systems. No need to fiddle with compatibility settings, it just works out of the box. While it does include some "ease of use" / "quality of life" features, they can all be toggled off (or are off by default) to preserve the classic Diablo experience, if you want. If the GOG install doesn't work for you, this is probably the easiest way to get the game running on a modern OS.

Just had this issue today. Starting the application from the .exe in the Diablo folder location worked for me (as mentioned by another user). Specifically the "Launch Diablo" .exe wherever you set the install location, which for me was C:\Program Files (x86)\GOG Galaxy\Games\Diablo

You also can just go to the Hellfire.exe, go to properties and change compatibility.
I changed it to W8 and it works now, also from the GOG.exe.
